Declaration of Independence
The Declaration of Independence was adopted by the Continental Congress on July,4 ,1776. Richard Henry Lee, Virginia's representative in congress, was the man who introduced the motion for independence from the British. However, many other congressmen didn't agree with this motion and it was thoroughly debated. Therefore, their was a vote in which many colonies favored the motion and Jefferson, Adam Smith, and Benjamin Franklin were tasked by the Congress to draft the Declaration. -
Washington Crosses The Delaware
During the revolution Washington and his troops crossed the Delaware river in hopes to surprise the enemy who were celebrating Christmas. Before this Washington's army lost many battles and resulted in the lost of New York and other regions. Washington's men fought the enemy but had to retreat since only half of his men could have crossed the river. However, this action raised the spirits of the colonist. -
Holding The Amerindian Allegiance
The Amerindians got involved in the war but the Amerindians didn't know who to agree with and different groups sided with either the British or the Americans. British agent William Clad warned the Amerindians not to work with the Americans because they say good things but had bad hearts. American commander Daniel Brodhead told the Amerindians that " the British would tell them fine stories but had come 3000 miles just to rob and steal and fill their pocket" (Turning Points in World History). -
The Taxation of Colonies Act
This was an act passed by the British Parliament. It declared that Great Britain wouldn't impose tax or duty to get revenues from the colonies for Great Britain. This act was passed because the British wanted to end war and to solve their disputes. This was passed by parliament after the Tea Act that angered the colonies. -
Benjamin Franklin
Benjamin Franklin was a states man, scientist, and author. He agreed with Adam Smiths ideas of making the 13 colonies into one free nation. Franklin also helped with writing the Declaration Of Independence. He helped to negotiate the end of the Revolutionary War against the British. In 1778 he also was sent to France to make an alliance with the French and the Colonist. -
The Treaty Of Alliance with France
The Treaty was singed by the French and the Americans and would become effective if war should break out between Great Britain and France. The alliance became operative in the summer of 1778 when naval skirmishing between the British and French. Therefore, the US and French came together against the British. This alliance also assisted the Americans in fighting the British. -
British Abandon Philadelphia
After the British had occupied the US capital of Philadelphia for nine months they evacuated to New York. The British army evacuated Philadelphia because they didn't want to risk an attack from the Congenital Army. However, they couldn't move by land since at this time the French was aligned with the Colonist. They did this in order to protect their army from French ships that may attack them. -
Benedict Arnold
Benedict Arnold was an American hero of the Revolution who later became a traitor to the US. He helped to stop the invasion of New York by the British but he didn't received credit of his work during the time. Therefore, he had secret negotiations with the British agreeing to turn over American post. In doing this the British agreed to give him money and a command in the British Army. However, his plot was discovered by the US and he escaped to the British. -
Stony Point, New York
This was a successful attack by the Americans against the British. The British were defeated on the Fort of Stony Point on New York Hudson river in the summer of 1779. However, it "had little strategic influence on the outcome of the Revolution" (The American Revolution 100 By Michael Lee Lanning). It caused the British to move their forces to attack the Southern States. -
John Adams
John Adams encouraged the rebellion and defined the liberties on which the New nation was founded. He "helped add territories and rights for the Americans". On February 1780, Adams returned to France tp prepare for the peace treaty negotiations that would end the war (The American Revolution 100 By Michael Lee Lanning). He also helped in the writing of the Declaration of Independence. -
Camden, South Carolina
"The American lost a crucial battle at Camden, South Carolina on August,16,1780. In the aftermath of the fight, the British increased their hold on South Carolina" (The American Revolution 100 By Michael Lee Lanning). The loss also allowed the British to have an open way to invade North Carolina and occupy it. If the Americans could have won the war the would have avoided the British occupation of the Southern State. -
The Battle of Yorktown
On this day General George Washington and his men with French forces went to battle against the British General Lord Cornwallis and his army. The battle took place in Yorktown, Virginia and was considered the most important battle. In the end the American and French forces won and the British Army surrendered. This caused the British government to negotiate to end the conflict.
