French and Indian war
The French and Native Americans teamed up against the British because they were trying to take land that wasn’t theirs. Although they had great spirit, they couldn’t take on the British Army. -
The stamp act
The British started taxing the colonists for stamps. This made them extremely upset and fed the colonists hatred for Britain. -
The Townshend act
The British started a tax on goods that the colonists imported from Great Britain. This creates a bitter taste and leads to the Boston Tea party. -
The Boston Massacre
The Boston Massacre was a “street fight” that started between a British soldier and a Wigmaker on the street. The built up aggression from the colonists got out of hand and some of them were even shot. -
The Boston Teaparty
The Boston Teaparty was when the colonists threw tea off of a boat into the ocean. They did this because the British put taxes in tea and other goods. This put even more anger in the colonists towards Great Britain. -
The Coercive Acts
The British thought it was about time to stop the rebellious acts that the colonists were committing. So they shut down the harbor that brought all of the goods and tea they dumped into the ocean until they paid them back for it. -
Battles of Lexington and Concord
This was the first shots between the Americans and British. The British were marching through Lexington because they had weapons there. The first shot was known as “The Shot Heard Around the World”. -
George Washington is appointed general
George Washington is made commander-in-chief and general of the new Continental Army. -
Colonists Gain Support of France
The American colonists gain support of King Louis XVI of France. This gave the colonists a big advantage in the war. -
Signing of the Declaration of Independence
Members of the US Congress signed the Declaration of Independence which gave the colonists independence as Americans. -
France joins the war
The French became alliances with the United States. This is now being considered as a world war. All of the events before this lead up to France joining the war and everything getting a whole lot messier. -
Peace Treaty
Preliminary peace treaty signed in Paris showed American independence and the British withdrew from America.
