the colonials were mad that there were British soldiers in their town. Fight often broke out between them and one time the soldiers open fired killing three men. -
Repeal of the Townshen Acts
parliament repealed all of the Townshend taxes except for the one on tea. Many people still would not buy the tea. -
Boston Tea Party
parliament passed the tea act giving Britain’s East India companies a monopoly on the tea. (Monopoly gives complete control of a good or service.) -
Coercive Acts
these laws forced the colonists to follow laws they felt were unfair. One law closed the port of Boston until the colonist paid for the destroyed tea. -
1st Continental Congress
the colonists were scared that Britain would take stronger actions against them. So the colonial leaders met in Philadelphia. Since it was the 1st meeting of its kind they called it the first continental congress. -
Lexington and Concord
General Gage sent 700 troops to lexiington and concord. They planned to arrest the two leaders of sons of liberty. (John Hancock & Samuel Adams) Paul Revere (member of sons of liberty) warned the leaders and townspeople. The minutemen were ready when the British came. -
2nd Continental Congress
the news of the Lexington and concord battle spread through the colonies. The colonial leaders called for the 2nd continental congress meeting. They met at the Pennsylvania state house. The leaders were divided about what to do some wanted war some didn’t. They decided to go to war. The army was called the continental army. George Washington was chosen as chief. -
attle of Bunker Hill
Battle of Bunker Hill-June 17, 1775- this battle was really fought on Breeds hill. The British won this battle but suffered heavy losses. More than 1,000 British soldiers had been killed or wounded and about 350 colonists had been killed or wounded. -
Olive Branch Petition
congress sent another petition to King George the third. This petition asked King George for peace and reminded him of their basic rights. But by the time it got there it was too late the battle o bunkerhill angered the British and the British was going to do whatever to crush the colonies -
Singing of the Declaration of Independence
the first to sign was John Hancock. He signed it big enough so the king could see it without his glasses.
