The Great Awakening
The Great Awakening is often called a revitalization. The Great Awakening brought about a new way of being religious. This movement encouraged expressing emotions when it came to worshipping. The movement gained many followers and led to the formation of many different denominations of Protestantism. As a result, there was much more religious tolerance in the colonies. The Great Awakening brought about a great deal of change for religion and paved the way for much more religious change. -
Stono Rebellion
The Stono Rebellion was a Rebellion that took place against slave masters in South Carolina. This uprising came from tensions that arose between slaves and their masters. Stono's Rebellion had a significant amount of casualties, and in the end, the slaves were defeated. This defeat changed the amount of limitations on the slaves' privileges because they were no longer allowed to assemble, learn to write, and travel freely. The Rebellion gave rise to the passing of the Negro Act of 1740. -
Stamp Act
The Stamp Act was a law passed by the British parliament that imposed taxes on colonists for all paper that was used. That means they were taxed on many things that were used everyday like newspapers. The colonists recognized that this law was unfair being that they had no representation in Parliament. Therefore, they rebelled against taxes that were imposed upon them, and these rebellions were one of the things that eventually inspired the colonists to begin the American Revolution. -
Dunmore's Proclamation
"I do hereby further declare all indented Servants, Negroes, or others, free that are able and willing to bear Arms, they joining His MAJESTY'S Troops as soon as may be."1 This excerpt from Dunmore's Proclamation perfectly describes what this proclamation was all about. Dunmore's proclamation, written by Lord Dunmore, recruited slaves and indentured servants to fight in the American Revolution. In return, these slaves would receive their freedom.This was a step towards ridding the US of slavery. -
Shay's Rebellion
Frustrated by their government, several colonists joined together to rebel in what we know as Shay's Rebellion. This Rebellion took place between 1786-1787 in Massachusetts and was a wake up call for the government to change and find a way to improve the Articles of Confederation. This was start towards a reform in government. Shay's Rebellion is relevant to American changes in history because it is one of the many events that led to the formation of the Constitution. -
Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom
The Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom was written by Thomas Jefferson and changed the way that we deal with religion in America. This Statute separated the government from religion. "All men shall be free to profess, and by argument to maintain, their opinion in matters of religion."2 As stated in the quote from the Virginia Statute for Regilious Freedom, people were free to practice their preferred religion free of persecution which they couldn't have previously done. -
