  • "Indians of All Tribes" Occupation of Alcatraz

    "Indians of All Tribes" Occupation of Alcatraz
    A group of Indians took over Alcatraz in November of 1969.
    They issued a proclamation called the "Proclamation of the Great White Father" which said that Alcatraz was fit for the Indian Reservation.

    This was a cross-country protest organized by Native Americans. The Indians started on the west coast and made it in Washington with a caravan in November of 1972.
  • Bureau of Indian Affairs building takeover:

    Bureau of Indian Affairs building takeover:
    The American Indian Movement together with 500 more American Indians took over the BIA building in D.C.
    This was caused by the need to negotiate about housing and other issues.
  • Wounded Knee Incident:

    Wounded Knee Incident:
    200 followers took over the small town of Wounded Knee, South Dakota. For 71 days, the town was controlled by AIM while they battled U.S. officials. They wanted to protest the removal of a tribal leader and for the Native Americans’ basic needs.
  • Federation of Survivor Schools:

    This was created to provide encouragement to the 16 survival schools.
  • The Longest Walk

    The Longest Walk
    Planned and organized by the American Indian Movement.
    There were about 2,000 supporters joined this event.
    The supporters concluded a 5-month march from San Francisco to the Washington Monument at Washington D.C.
