Opening Trade with Japan
American Commodore Matthew Perry visited japan to open up trade with the west for the first time in 200 years. Eventhough he was not the first person from the west to go over seas he was the first to actually acheive this feature with Japan in the 19th. We went over seas for economic reasons. We needed more countries to trade with for more goods. Doing this also gave us some more friends over on the Asia side of the world. -
Purchase of Alaska
Secretary of State, William H. Seward bought Alaska from Russia for a total of 7.2 million dollars, which would be 116 million dollars today. Russia wanted to sell the property in fear of Britan taking it. The state started out as the Dept. of Alaska. -
Spanish American War
The Spanish American War was a war between Ameica and Spain, over the indepence of Cuba. Spain wanted to rule of cuba and Cuba wanted to be by independent so we stepped in. We always feel the need to step in on other countries problems. Another reason that sent us to war was the destruction os the USS Maine. After it blew up we thought that it was Spain that blew it up. We went to war for Pride purposes. We werent going too let this country mess with us and take places so close to us. -
Annexation of Hawaii
The annexation of Hawaii because USA wanted more land. They already had some power over Hawaii. We had Political and Ecomonic say in some of the things they did. So, we sent troops to take the land over. We did this for political and economic power. -
US annexes the Philippines
The annexation of the philippines happened after the American-Philippine War. It started after the American-Spainish War. The Philippines wanted their independence from the US. The Philippines had a revolutiona dn fought us. They lost. We took over the Philippines and made it a territory. We did it for the over seas power. -
Open Door Policy with Japan
Commodore Matthew Perry went over seas to finally make trade with Japan. America hoped they copuld get a treaty to get resources and coal for commercial whaleing fleets. In the treaty we got peace and friendship with Japan, Opening of Shinoda and Hakodate ports for ships, and to help with american wrek\cked ships off of Japans coast. USA did this to get over sea friends and to help our ecomomy. -
Boxer Rebellion
This was not an actual rebellion. It did not oppose the ruling Qing authority. It was a violent anti-foreign and anti-Christian fight that happened between 1899-1901. It was initiated by the Righteous Harmony Society. This was just a dissapointment too china. This didnt Involve the USA but was a majot point in history. -
