Lee met General Ambrose E. Burnside, in Fredericksburg on the banks of the Rappahannock River. General Burnside, attempted, to take Lee's forces, which were fortified at the top of a series of hills. Merrimac vs. Monitor
This is one of the most famous navel battles the Merrimac vs. Monitor. The war started when the Confederate ship Merrimac attackd the Union ships in Hampton Roads before McClellan's peninsular campaign. This was created a new era for navel battles and the South could not win. -

The Union troops following the Confederate into New Orleans and occupied the city of New Orleans. -
Vicksburg
Vicksburg, Mississippi had been the only serious stronghold against Union command of the mighty river( Ignitia.com editors). Grant marched his troops down and waited downstream for Rear Admiral David D. Porter to run the fleet of gunboats and transports past the Vicksburg batteries. The battle went on for forty-seven days. On July 4, 1863, the battle was over. -
Chickamauga
Union and Confederate troops met at Chickamauga Creek, and the Union troops were defeated and retreated to Chattanooga.
