    This was the day that the United States agreed to purchase Alaska from Russia after giving it lots of thought since they didn't think that land was that valuable. It was purchased for $7.2 million.

    Candidates: Rutherford B. Hayes, (R), and Samuel Tilden (D). They both tied up, and no one won. So, they had to come up with some sort of compromise.

    On this day, the 18th Amendment was ratified, banning the productions, transportation, and selling of alcohol and alcoholic products. It became known as prohibition.

    John Scopes's trial opened on this day, becoming nationally known as the man who challenged the law that forbade the teaching of evolution in schools. He lost this case.

    At 7:52 am, a man named Charles Lindbergh flew on a solo flight across the Atlantic from Long Island to France. It took 33 hours.

    The Great Depression was a period of time where the US had hit an all time low in terms of economics. People were jobless, living in poverty and desperate to survive and make ends meet. This depression lasted from 1929 to late 1930s.

    In 1929, FDR appointed Francis Perkins to become Secretary of Labor, making her the first woman to head an executive office. She was in office from 1933 to 1945.

    On this day, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed a proclamation that admitted Alaska as a state in the U.S. It was the 49th state in America.
