1804, the Lewis and Clark Expedition
In 1804, Thomas Jefferson gave the order to both Lewis and Clark to map out the northwest of the United States. There journey begin in St. Louis and camp DuBois and both begin on the Missouri River. By September 23, 1806, they had failed to find a waterway that leads from the Missouri river, all the way to the Pacific Ocean. They did, however; come across 100 new different types of animals and 178 different plants, as well as provide 140 different maps for that region. -
1812, the War of 1812
On 1812, U.S President James Madison asks Congress to go to war with the United Kingdom. Before Congress could approve of this, British ships create a blockade with the United States. Although Madison was not aware of the blockade, he signs declaration after congress approved to go to war with Great Britain. -
1815, the war of 1812 ends
In 1815, British troops unaware of the peace treaty that had been signed January 8, but would not be ratified until February 17, take 5,300 troops and attack American troops in the last battle of the war of 1812. Led by Andrew Jackson, major general for the U.S, Britain ended up suffering with 2,000 casualties, while America with only 71. -
1820, free African slaves sail for New York to Freetown
On 1820, a total of 86 African slaves who were set free, along with 3 colonization society members, move away the United States from New York City and sail to Freetown, Sierra Leone. -
1829, Andrew Jackson becomes president
On March 4 of 1829, Andrew Jackson, who is now in the Democratic party, is elected as president, who replaces john Quincy Adams after is term in office. Along with Jackson, John C. Calhoun is elected as vice president and would serve along side Jackson for the rest of their term. -
1860, Abraham Lincoln is elected president
On 1860, Lincoln, along 4 other candidates, decide to run for president. Out of the 4, he ends up defeating 3 of them and runs against John Cabell Breckinridge. Lincoln wins with a total of 180 electoral votes while Breckinridge only had 72. along with him, Hannibal Hamlin becomes his vice president for the rest of their term. -
1861, the Civil War begins
In 1861, on April 12, Fort Sumter in Charleston, south Carolina is bombarded by Confederate forces for 34 hours straight until the fort was turned over to the confederacy on April 14 by Major Robert Anderson. This would be the start of the Civil War that would last for 4 years and would be recorded as Americas bloodiest war, with a total of 750,000 casualties from both sides. The reason as to how the war begin was to due to both northern and southern states bitter debate over slavery. -
1865, the Civil War comes to an end
On 1865, after four years of Americas bloodiest war, it finally comes to and end. General Robert E. Lee, who was commander in chief of Confederate forces, surrenders his 27,000 soldiers to Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Court House, Virginia. This in turn ended the four years of Civil War conflict. Any additional troops would continue to surrender until May 26, officially ending the war.
