Signed by King John in 1215 in England. This implemented rule of law instead rule of man.It also outlined personal rights the king couldn't violate. Both of these would later be used in American government. -

Roots of American Gov't - Petition of Rights
This is document signed by King Charles in England. This required that instead of the King making all the laws, parliaments approval also be obtained too. It also established that the government couldn't unlawfully imprison people. -
Roots of American Gov't - English Bill of Rights
This document protection from cruel and unusual punishment and guaranteed free speech. -
First Continental Congress
Repealed intolerable acts and boycotted British goods. Britain rejected the Declaration and Resolves. -
Second Continental Congress
Established a continental army, wrote the declaration of independence, and assumed the role of independent government. -
Declaration of Independence
This document was signed by the Second Continental Congress and was inspired by John Locke. This document blamed the King for a number of the colonies problems. -
Articles of Confederation
The purpose of the document was to have a confederation to keep sovereignty, freedom and independence. This was delayed by arguments over who would control western lands. -
The Constitutional Convention
This led to the drafting of a new constitution. -
Virginia Plan
This plan favored large states and its representation was based on population. -
New Jersey Plan
This plan favored small states and representation was equal forall states. -
Gibbons v. Ogden
Court said only Congress has the right to regulate commerce between states
