The slave act was amended and the slave trade was abolished in Washington, D.C. California was now a free state and the government had just created Utah. -

Dred Scott was originally a slave and he was trying to sue his owner for not letting him have his freedom in a free state. He had lost the case for his freedom. -

Dred Scott was an African American that tried to sue his owner to get freedom for him, his wife, and their two children. He was unsuccessful. His case was called Dred Scott v. Stanford. -
