Bill of Rights Ratified
On this day, the Bill of rights went from a document adopted by the house to the first ten official amendments to the constitution of the United States of America. After much adversity, this passing finally occured. This is significant because there was a large push against the ratification from people who believed that they didn't need such a document. But even afterwards, many still opposed the document claiming that it was too restricting. -
Presidential Election of 1792
George Washington is elected for a second term as president of the United States. He chose John Adams as his running mate for vice president. George Washington won the election in a unanimous decision by the electoral college and this is significant because no one has done that since Washington. Washington had opposition, but they were no match for the incumbent president. -
Eli Whitney invents the Cotton Gin
On this day Eli Whitney recieved his patent for the Cotton GIn. The Cotton Gin was a machine that mechanically seperated the seeds of a cotton flower from the useful fiberous part. The introduction of this machine made cotton production shoot through the roof as much more could be processed in a shorter amount of time. This lead to a greater production of the plant and a greater need for slave labor in the south -
Battle of Fallen Timbers
This Battle was the last major battle in a war with the Western Confederacy of Natives and the United States in the midwest territories. The battle was a decisive victory for the US. The battle is important because it ended all major hostilities in the midwest territories for the time being. but the Natives would be back before long. The Americans had control enough to settle the region. -
Election of 1796
The election of 1796 resulted in the chosing of John Adams of the Federalist partly for president of the United States. The vice president was selected as Thomas Jefferson form the Democratic-Republican party. This election was significant because it was the first time the President and Vice President were selected from opposite parties. This forced the parties to work together with one another to have a fully functioning government. -
Alien and Sedition Acts
The Alien and Seditions were passed in 1798 and came along with several powers given to the president. Some of these powers included the right to deport any person considered to be a threat to national security. A lot of oppositions came against these acts because they were considered unconstitutional and gave the president too much power in the nation. People thought others should not be deported based on the arbitrary will of the president. -
Presidential Election of 1800
In the presidential election of 1800, Republicans Thomas Jefforson and Aaron Burr tied in th electoral college for the presidential seat. It was up to Congress to decide president. Congressional leader and federalist Alexander Hamilton, chose Jefferson. This election marked the beginning of the power shift from federalists to Republicans. After the decision, Aaron burr challenged Hamilton to a duel and killed him. -
Louisiana Purchase
In this year, Thomas Jefferson made the agreement to purchase the Louisiana territory from the emporer of France, Napoleon Bonaparte. He paid a whole $15 million for the land which roughly works out to 3 cents an acre. With thepurchase of this land, the United States grew to nearly twice the size it was before. This would help fufill Jeferson's goal of creating an agrarian nation by supplying enough land to give a large amount of citizens the land they needed to run their own farm. -
Marbury vs. Madison
In this case, the supreme court was granted with the power to overrule a law passed by the congress if it so determined that it was not fitting for the nation. This was important to the system of checks and balances in the nation because a law could be rendered unconstitutional and then be recalled from being enstated -
The war of 1812
America declares war on Britain on the grounds that British maritime policy was unnacceptable. The act of impressment was running rampant through the atlantic and the US would no longer condone it. No one really won this war, and fighting was stopped after the treaty of Ghent, a city in Belgium. However, the US proved that they could go toe to toe with one of the most powerful nations in the world. People would then respect America in the world and no one would directly attack them until 1942
