11th Amendment
Prohibits the federal court from hearing certain lawsuits against states. This Amendment was adopted to overrule the U.S supreme Court's decision in Chisholm v. Georgia (1793) -
12th Amendment
Each elector must cast distinct votes for president and vice president. -
13th Amendment
Abolished slavery, although forced labor could still be used as a form of punishment. The 13th Amendment was adopted because the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863 did not end slavery entirely. -
14th Amendment
All people born in the United States are considered citizens of the United States or the state they live in and gave legal rights to black citizens. After the Civil War congress submitted three amendments to the states as part of its reconstruction program to guarantee equal civil and legal rights to black citizens (1865). -
15th Amendment
The rights of citizens are never denied no matter race,color, or previous living. The Southern Republican Party vanished with the end of reconstruction in the late 1870's.The southern states government nullified both the 14th and 15th Amendment -
16th Amendment
Congress can collect taxes on income. -
17th Amendment
Gives people the right to vote for their state senators instead of state legislatures. -
18th Amendment
Made the production, transport, and sale of intoxicating liquors illegal. The Eighteenth Amendment was created because of the effort of the temperance movement and Anti-Saloon League. 1908-1931 was when the Anti-Saloon League was a thing. -
19th Amendment
Granted women the right to vote. The Woman's suffrage movement influenced the creation of the 19th Amendment. The Seneca Falls convention was another event and that happened in 1848. -
20th Amendment
Reduced the presidential transition. It also states who becomes president if the president cannot start serving immediately. -
21st Amendment
This Amendment repealed the 18th Amendment. This Amendment was created because in the late 1800's, prohibition movements were becoming more popular in the United States. Religious groups led these movements and considered alcohol, especially drunkenness, a threat to the nation. -
22nd Amendment
Says that no one can be elected to serve as president more than twice. -
23rd Amendment
Allows American citizens residing in the District of Columbia to vote for presidential electors. This Amendment was passed because of the growing population of Washington D.C in the early to mid 1900's. -
24th Amendment
The right for people to vote in elections cannot be denied. -
25th Amendment
The Vice President takes over if the President can no longer serve. After the assassination of JFK in 1963, this amendment was created. -
26th Amendment
The right to vote, if you are 18 or older, cannot be denied. -
27th Amendment
Prohibits any law that increases or decreases the salary of members of congress. In 1789 this Amendment was introduced by James Madison.
