This is a timeline for amendments 11-27 -
The 11th Amendment
It keeps Federal Courts from hearing certain lawsuits against states. The Amendment arose from arguments over Article III of the original constitution. -
The 12th Amendment
It was introduced because of weaknesses in the Electoral College. The Amendment makes it so each Electoral member casts one vote for both the Vice President and the President. -
The 13th Amendment
The 13th Amendment was made to abolish slavery. It came from the aftermath of the Civil War when the Emancipation of Proclamation. -
The 14th Amendment
The 14th Amendment granted citizenship to all persons born on U.S. soil. It was introduced after the Civil war ended and Southern States started restricting the rights of former slaves. -
The 15 Amendment
The 15th Amendment gave all males the right to vote no matter their race or age. The Amendment was introduced as another fulfill promises to former African American Slaves. -
The 16th Amendment
The 15th Amendment was a result of the Pollock v. The Farmers' Loan and Trust Co. Court Case. The 16th Amendment allows Congress to collect income tax from all Americans. -
The 17th Amendment
The 17th Amendment was introduced as a way to end corruption in voting for Senators. The Amendment calls for a direct election by the voters instead of state legislatures. -
The 18th Amendment
The 18th Amendment prohibited the use of alcohol. The Amendment came from the Temperance Movement in which women were fighting to prohibit alcohol. -
The 19th Amendment
The 19th Amendment guaranteed women across the United States the right to vote. The Amendment came from the Woman Suffrage Movement in the 1920's. -
The 20th Amendment
The 20th Amendment changed and reduced the Presidential Transition of Power from March 4th, to January 20th. The Amendment was added to expedite the transition of Power from the Defeated President to the new President-Elect. -
The 21st Amendment
The 21st Amendment repealed the 18th Amendment on the prohibition of Alcohol. This Amendment was created to remove the prohibition on alcohol due to the negative impact it had on the economy. -
The 22nd Amendment
The 22nd Amendment limits how many the terms of a President, and how many times an Official can be elected. The Amendment was created after Franklin D. Roosevelt served 4 Presidential Terms. -
The 23rd Amendment
The 23rd Amendment gave the citizens of Washington D.C. the right to vote in elections. The amendment was created to give residents who lived in the District of Columbia voting rights. -
The 24th Amendment
The 24th Amendment ended the Poll tax. The Amendment was created in response to Southern State policies that were inherited Post-Civil War. -
The 25th Amendment
The 25th Amendment was created after the assassination of John F. Kennedy. The Amendment states that the Vice President becomes President if the President dies, resigns, or is voted out of Office. -
The 26th Amendment
The 26th Amendment gives citizens who are at least 18 years of age the right to vote. The amendment to lower the voting age was created during the draft for World War II. -
The 27th Amendment
The 27th Amendment prevents members of Congress from raising their pay. The Amendment was created to reduce corruption in Congress.
