11th Amendment

Feb 7, 1795

This amendment was passed so that citizens would know that their cases involving suing other states would not fall under the jurisdiction of the federal government.

12th Amendment

Jun 15, 1804

This amendment states that voters must cast one vote for a president and one for a vice president. Also, you have to be eligible to run for president if you plan an running for vice president.

13th Amendment

Dec 6, 1865

This amendment informed citizens that slavery or involuntary servitude was now illegal except in the case that it was used as a punishment for a crime that was committed.

14th Amendment

Jul 9, 1868

This amendment stated that all people born or naturalized in the United States are citizens. The 3/5th clause was no longer in effect. It also

15th Amendment

Feb 3, 1870

This amendment made it a law that states are not allowed to prevent anyone, of any ethnicity or color, from voting. Some states got around this through the use of poll taxes and literacy tests.

16th Amendment

Feb 3, 1913

This amendment allowed for the federal government to impose an income tax on citizens.

17th Amendment

Apr 8, 1913

This amendment changed the process of electing senators so that they would be elected by the people instead of the state legislature.

18th Amendment

Jan 16, 1919

This amendment banned the manufacturing, sale, and transportation of alcohol even though consumption was still legal.

19th Amendment

Aug 18, 1920

This amendment gave women the right to vote, which could not be denied by states or the federal government.

20th Amendment

Jan 23, 1933

This amendment changed the date of the presidential inauguration from March to January. It also states that the vice president would assume the duties of the president if they were to die before the inauguration.

21st Amendment

Dec 5, 1933

This amendment repeals the 18th amendment after Congress realized that prohibition was not a good idea.

22nd Amendment

Mar 21, 1947

This amendment prevented presidents from serving more than 2 full terms or 10 years.

23rd Amendment

Mar 23, 1961

This amendment gives the residents of Washington D.C. the right to vote for representatives in the Electoral College.

24th Amendment

Jan 23, 1964

This amendment prevented states from using a poll tax to prevent people from voting in elections.

25th Amendment

Feb 10, 1967

This amendment states that if the president were to be removed from office, resign, or die, the vice president would become president.

26th Amendment

Jun 1, 1971

This amendment changed the legal voting age from 21 to 18 for U.S. citizens.

27th Amendment

May 20, 1992

This amendment says that the congressmen cannot give themselves a raise until they vote on it at the next congressional session.
