Papa Roach Releases "Last Resort"
One of the first bands to set up the nu-metal/alternative rock sound of the last decade was Papa Roach. Thier debut single, "Last Resort" , from their multi-platinum album Infest, put them on the map and it is still their first song that comes to mind for many fans. The song (and the video) is about being depressed on the inside, but not really letting it show on the outside. It reached number 1 on the U.S. modern rock tracks chart. It has been used in many movies, tv shows, and video games. -
Disturbed Releases "Down With the Sickness"
Although recorded in 1999, "Down With the Sickness" is the best known song from Disturbed and one of the best known rock songs of all time. It was relased as part of their first CD, The Sickness. The single peaked at number 5 on the Mainstream Rock Tracks and was certified platinum. Vocalist, David Draiman, became known for his wild scream used throughout this song. This song became even more poular when it was used in the film "Dawn of the Dead". -

This is the song that put Nickelback on the map. Singer, Chad Kroeger, wrote this song about a girlfriend that he had a stressful relationship with. It reached number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. "How You Remind Me" was the most played song of the decade on U.S. radio. -

This is the song that pushed Linkin Park into the mainstream. It was released as the fourth single from the album "Hybrid Theory". It reached number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100. It became Billboard's second most played rock song of the decade. This song helped launch the rap-metal genre. -
Puddle of Mudd Releases "Blurry"
Released on their debut CD, "Come Clean", this is Puddle of Mudd's best known song. It peaked at number 1 for both the Billboard Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks and Hot Modern Rock Tracks. The song is about a break-up as well as lead singer, Wes Scantlin being apart from his son. The harmonic guitar riff in this song was voted one of the ten best of the decade. "Blurry" has been in films such as "A Man Apart" and "The Butterfly Effect". -

Trapt released "Headstrong" as their first single from their self-titled debut CD. It peaked at number 1 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock and Modern Rock charts. It has been used in many video games and movies. -
Chevelle Releases "Send The Pain Below"
This was the second single from Chevelle's "Wonder What's Next" album. "Send The Pain Below" is considered Chevelle's most successful song. It reached number 1 on both the Billboard Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks and Hot Modern Rock Tracks charts.The song describes a relationship where one person suppresses and hurts the other. The point of view from the song is from the person being hurt. -
Evanescence Releases "Bring Me To Life"
This song won Evanescence a Grammy for Best Hard Rock Performance. It features guest vocals from 12 Stones' Paul McCoy. This was their first single from the debut album, Fallen. This song is about waking to all the things you've been missing in this life. "Bring Me To Life" charted number 73 on Billboard's 'Best of the 2000s Rock Songs' Chart and is the only song by a female-led band to be on the chart. -
Three Days Grace Releases "I Hate Everything About You"
This is the debut single for the alternative metal band Three Days Grace of their self-titled debut CD. This song was released as part of the compliation Now 15. It peaked at number 4 on the Billboard Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks. The music video is about finding peace and standing against those that hurt you. "I Hate Everything About You" launched Three Days Grace into rock superstardom. -
Foo Fighters Releases "Let It Die"
This is the fourth single from the Foo Fighters sixth album, "Echoes, Silence, Patience. & Grace". Vocalist, Dave Grohl, admitted this song was about Courtney Love, wife of his former front man in Nirvana, Kurt Cobain. Although they did film a music video, it was never released. It reached number 1 on the Billboard Hot Modern Rock Tracks.
