356 BCE

Becomes king of Macedonia and Greece

336 BCE

He becomes king of Macedonia and Greece at age 20 after his father King Phillip II is murdered by his own bodyguard

Alexander crosses Hellespont into Anatolia

334 BCE

He crosses Hellespont into Anatolia with the goal of defeating King Darius III and councuring the Persian Empire. Alexander wins the battle but does not defeat Darius III or conquer Persia (YET)

Alexander fights Darius at Issus

333 BCE

Darius had a larger army, but Alexander the Great used his phalanx formation to win the battle. Darius fled and Alexander couldn’t catch him, but he captured Darius’s wife and children.

Battle of Gaugamela

331 BCE

This was the final battle with Persia in which Darius III realized he couldn't win and fled but later died therefore Alexander won the battle and became King of Persia

Alexander the Great conquered Egypt

331 BCE

Alexander conquered Egypt in 331 B.C. after which he founded the city of Alexandria and was proclaimed son of the god Zeus-Ammon. In Egypt, Alexander didn't force the people to adopt his religion or culture and then left after designing the city of Alexandria

Marries Roxanne

327 BCE

He married a Persian woman Roxanne (Darius III's daughter) and convinced his soldiers to marry Persians too

Alexander the Great dies of an illness

323 BCE

When Alexander reached India his soldiers wanted to return home, and on the way back to Greece Alexander became Ill and died in Babylon (Iraq) at the age of 32
