Recogintion
In 1769, Alessandro published his first paper, which attracted attention and helped to secure him for his first public appointment, professor of physics in Como [1774] a position which was held until 1779, when he was elected for chair of natural philosophy in the universidy of Pavia. -
First invention
In 1774, Alessandro Volta became Professor of Physics at the Royal school in Como. While at the Royal school, Alessandro designed his first invention the electrophorus. The electrophorus was a device that produced static electricity and was charged by being rubbed. For years he studied and experimented with atmospheric electricity by igniting static sparks. -
First person to discover swamp gas
In 1776, while visiting local swamps, Alessandro discovered swamp gas, which is used to light lanterns. -
Appointment of Professor at the University of Pavia
In 1778, Alessandro became a well known scientific person and was appointed Professor of Physics at the university of Pavia. That was a position he held fo forty years. -
Alessandro's visit to the principal seats of learning
In 1782 Alessandro visited the principal seats of learning in France, Holland, Germany and England. He also meet many of the representative men of the day. -
Married
In 1794, Alessandro Volta married Teresa Peregrini,daughter of Count Peregrini. Teresa and Alessandro raised three children, Giovanni, Flaminio and Zanino. -
Finding
In 1797, Alessandro realized that the frogs legs served as both a conductor of electricity and as a detector of electricity. He replaced the frogs leg with brine-soaked paper, and detected the flow of electricity by other means familiar to him from his previous studies. -
Invention
In the 1800's Alessandro Volta developed the Voltaic pile, a forerunner of the electric battery and also discovered the first practical method of generating electricity. -
Retirement
In 1818, Alessandro retired returning to the family estate in Camnago, near Como. -
Death
Alessandro Volta passed away on the 5th of March 1827 in Comnago, near Como,Lombardy,Italy at the age of 82.He was also buried there.
