In 1921 Einstein was awarded the Nobel Prize in physics of his contributions to science and physics. Einstein won the Nobel prize, mostly due to his discovery of the photoelectric effect and theory of relativity. Einstein's theory of relativity showed how the energy of objects directly related to the mass. The photoelectric effect explained how when ultraviolet light hits a surface, that surface will then release electrons. (Cillizza, 10 Major Accomplishments of Albert Einstein.)
