Birth
Albert Einstein was born in Ulm, Germany, on March 14,1879.
His parents were Hermann and Pauline Einstein. He had one sister who was born on November 18, 1881(Dank 3) (Küpper). -
World Events: Chinese Exlusion Act is Passed.
The Chinese Exlcusion act was passed and signed by President Chester A. Arthur, barring Chinese immigrants for ten years. When it expired in 1892 it was renewed for another ten years and was made permanent in 1902. It was finally repealed in 1943. However only 105 Chinese immigrants were allowed into the country. It was not until the Immigration act of 1965 that a large-scale Chinese immigration was allowed (Chinese Exclursion Act 1882). -
Swiss Federal Polytechnic School
Albert Einstein enrolled at Swiss Federal Polytechnic School at age 16. He failed French, chemistry, and biology on the entrance exams. However he was allowed entrance because of his high marks on mathematics and physics. He attended a special high school run by Jost Winteler in Aarau, Switzerland, and graduated in 1896 (Michio Kaku). -
Albert Einstein Marries Mileva Maric
Albert Einstein marries Mileva Maric. On May 14, 1904 they had their first child, Hans Albert Einstein. On July 28, 1910 they had their second child, Eduard Einstein. However due to his constant travels and studies they divorced in 1919 (Nobel Prize). -
Wright Brothers Take Flight
On December 17, 1903 the Wright Flyer became the first powered, heavier-than-air machine to achieve controlled, sustained flight with a pilot aboard. In 1905 the Wright Brothers created their first practical airplane that could fly for several minutes at a time. On October 5, Wilbur made a flight in which he circled the field 30 times in 39 minutes for a total distance of 24 1/2 miles (The Invention of Aerial Age). -
Brownian Motion
Brownian Motion is the random movements of microscopic particles suspended in caused by collisions with molecules of the surrounding medium. It is named after Robert Brown. In 1905 Einstein published a paper on Brownian Motion determining the dimensions of the molecule. This discovery makes atoms and molecules more univerally accepted. Also this theory applies to all diffussion phenomena, like mixing of gases and liquids, etc (David Cassidy). -
Mass Energy Equivalence.
On 1905, also called Einsteins "Miracle Year" Albert Einstein devolopes a theory called mass energy equivalence or e=mc2. Energy is equaled to mass times the speed of light squared. In other words mass can be changed into energy and vice versa, while the speed of light is constant. This was published in within Einsteins theory of special relativity. This discovery eventually leads to the creation of the atomic bomb, which is used in WWII by the U.S (Encyclopedia Britannica Blog) (Mary Bellis). -
Archduke Ferdinand Assassination (World War I)
On 1914 Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria and his wife Sophie are shot to death by a Bosnian Serb nationalist during an official visit to the Bosnian capital of Sarajevo. This sparked a chain of events that leads to the beginning of World War I. Austria-Hungary declares war on Serbia with Germany as its ally against Serbia and Russia and their allies; France and Great Britian. WWI ended on November 11, 1918 with Germany surrendering to the allies (This Day in History). -
Divorce with Mileva Maric and Remarriage
As Einsteins fame spread his relationship with Mileva began to decline. They frequently argued about their children and finaces. Convince their marriage was doomed he began to have an affair with Elsa Löwenthal, his second cousin. He later married her and in 1919 he divorced with Mileva. He also agreed to give her the money he might receive if he ever won a Nobel Prize (Michio Kaku). -
Nobel Prize (Photoelectric Effect)
The photoelectric effect is when a photon strikes an atom with sufficient energy to eject an electron from the atom. Albert Einstein received a Nobel prize in Physics for his discovery on the law of photoelectric effect. He was unable to receive the award in 1921 so it was reserved until 1922. The breakthrough of the photoelectric helped prove that all particles exhibit the wave like behavior. (Nobel Prize) (Anne Marie Helmenstine, Ph.D.) (Antimatter). -
Empire State Building Opening
In 1929 the Empire State Building began construction On May 1, 1931 it opened up. The elevator, in the Empire State Building could travel up to 1,200 feet per minute. The Empire State Building stood at 1,250 feet tall and became the tallest building in the world. It remain the tallest until completion of the World Trade Center in 1972 (Jennifer Rosenberg). -
Immigration to the U.S
In 1932 Einstein decided to leave Germany forever. He immigrates to the United States and takes residence in Princeton, New Jersey on 1933, when Adolf Hitler came to power in Germany on January 30, 1933, Einstein vowed that he would never return to Germany again. He cuts all ties with Germnay and renounced his German citizenship (SparkNotes). -
Hindenburg Disaster
The Hindenburg was the largest airship ever built; eight-hundred feet long from its nose to its tail fins. It was a blimp that used hydrogen as a gas to make the blimp float. It carried over 2,656 people across the Atlantic between Germany to New York. On May 6, 1937, in a span of 37 seconds, the Hindenburg was destroyed in a fire. It is stil unknown today what caused this great horror (The Mystery of the Hindenburg Disaster). -
Atomic Bomb
On August 2, 1939 Einstein sent a letter to president Franklin D. Roosevelt about the German efforts to build an atomic bomb. 1939-1945 $2 billion was spent on the development of the "Manhattan Project". Although Einsteins did not directly participate in the development his letter to Roosevelt and theory mass energy equvalence ultimately lead to the creation of the atomic bomb (Mary Bellis). -
Germany Invades Poland (World War II)
On January 1934 Hitler signed an aggression pact with Poland in order to neutralize the possibility of a French-Polish military alliance against Germany before Germany culd rearm. Hitler also signed a German-Soviet Pact that allowed Germany to invade Poland. On September 1, 1939 Germany invaded Poland and defeated their army in weeks. In response to this England and France both declared war on Germany. This event is one of the causes that sparks the beginning of WWII (Invasion of Poland). -
Death
Albert Einstein dies at age 76 of a ruptured aneurysm in Princeton, New Jersey. His legacy continued to live on. He was award the 1993 Nobel Prize for discovery of gravitation waves, predicted by Einstein. In 1995 a Nobel Prize was awarded discovering Bose-Einstein condensates (a new form of matter that can occur at extremely low temperatures or black holes). Physicists today are trying to finish Einstein’s ultimate dream of a“theory of everything" (Dank 98-99) (Encyclopedia Britannica).
