Birth
Alan Turing was born in Maida Vale, London on June 23 1912 -
Sherborne School
Turing attended Sherborne School at the age of 13. -
Einstein
By the age of 16, Turing had the ability to grasp Einstein's work and also able to understand Einstein's theories of Newtons Laws of Motion -
Kings College
Turing attends King College for Mathematics -
Elected fellow of Kings College
At the age of 22 Turing becomes a Fellow at King's College. -
Princeton
In 1938 Turing comes to America and attends Princeton to further study Mathematics -
Development of the Bombe
The Bombe was a code-breaking machine, developed by Turing and Gordon Welchman during World War II. It helped the allies during WWII and was able to break german codes. -
WWII Code Breaking
During the War Turing and his colleagues were able to tackle other German codes and break German Naval Enigma, which greatly aided the allies in winning the war -
Wartime hero
After the war ended in 1945, Turing was awarded OBE for his wartime efforts and for helping the allies win the war. -
National Physical Laboratory
In 1946, Turing also joined the National Physical Lab, where is he works to create a computing machine. During that time he also publishes a paper on his works and findings -
Deputy Director at Manchester University
In 1949 Turing becomes Deputy director and is in charge of the Computing Laboratory. There he works on the Manchester Mark 1 and artificial intelligence. He created an experiment on AI that tried to implement a guideline for machine intelligence. This later became the "Turing Test". -
Computing Machinery and Intelligence
In 1950 Alan Turing published "Computing Machinery and Intelligence". This paper became very known and also famous for the Turing test. -
Turing and Murray
In 1952 being a homosexual was illegal in the United Kingdom. Turing and Arnold Murray meet and share a romantic relationship. Being that this is not allowed during that time Turing is arrested for Gross indecency and given a choice, prison or to be chemically castrated with hormones. He pleaded guilty and chose the chemical castration -
Death
On June 8th 1954 Alan Turing commits suicide by biting into an apple laced with cyanide. -
Turing Award
In 1966 the Alan Turing award is created. It is an award the is recognized as the highest honor for a computer scientist. It was created because Alan Turing is considered one of the leaders of theoretical computer science and artificial intelligence.
