First Concept of an Airplane
This term airplane was first created by Sir George Cayley who put a stick on fixed wings with a movable tail to create a glider. Cayley's glider was the first object to fly without using a hot air balloon or movable wings. http://www.wright-brothers.org/History_Wing/History_of_the_Airplane/History_of_the_Airplane_Intro/History_of_the_Airplane_Intro.htm -

A Practical Flying Machine
The Wright Flyer III, built by the Wright brothers had a completely differnt engine design, but it still modeled the two previous Wright airplanes. This plane looked promising, but it crashed on July 14, 1905. In order to successfully pilot the plane, the Wright brothers practically doubled each key component including the wingspan and the rudder. This model was very successful and flew over 24 miles making it one of the only "practical flying machine[s]" of its time. -
World War I
Inventors began to think of ways that the airplane could be changed for the better as World War I was about to begin. The airplane was equipped with machine guns. These were the first kinds of planes that were completely designed to shoot down other planes.

Cabin Pressurization
Cabin Pressurization was developed during World War II. Without this innovation, it would not be possible for the people in planes to live after traveling higher than 10,000 feet. http://www.wired.com/2008/10/the-worlds-grea/ -
Airplanes on Water
Howard Hughes, a very successful aviator, created the Hercules. The Hercules was the first plane of its kind to be able to float on water and take off in the water. This was the largest flying boat of its time. http://www.boeing.com/history/products/h-4-flying-boat.page -
Boeing 747
The Boeing 747 was designed in 1969. The essential purpose of this type of plane is to transport over long distances, especially oceans. It has been called "one of the most successful aircrafts ever produced." http://www.greatachievements.org/?id=3728 -
B-2 Bomber
In 1990, The B-2 Bomber was developed. This specific plane has a recognizable triangle design. This was a very important design because it was a stealth plane which does not show up on radar. This technique certainly advances the military aspect of this aircraft. http://www.greatachievements.org/?id=3728 -
Computer-Aided Design
The Boeing 777 was one of the biggest planes to be created with the aid of computer design. http://www.greatachievements.org/?id=3728 -
Supersonic Aircraft
In order to create a supersonic jet (faster than sound), NASA and Russia work together. From their cooperation, the Tu- 144LL is created, http://www.greatachievements.org/?id=3728
