The Republican National Convention is held in Chicago, Illinois to decide on the republican nominee for presidency. Abraham Lincoln is chosen as the republican nominee on the third ballot. -
Democratic National Convention (April)
The Democratic National Convention is held in Charleston, South Carolina to decide on the democratic presidential nominee. A nominee could not be figured out and the meeting was moved to continue the next month. -
Democratic National Convention (May)
The Democratic National Convention resumed in Baltimore to decide a nominee for presidency of the United States. The democrats nominate Stephen Douglass and Herschal V. Johnson for presidency. -
Rumors of South Carolina's Planned Secession
Governor William Henry Gist notifies the southern states that South Carolina is considering secession. -
Presidential Election
Abraham Lincoln is elected the seventeenth president of the United States. He is the first republican to be elected that is against the spread of slavery. -

Union forces achieve victory in Mill Springs, Kentucky thus weakening the confederate hold on the state. -

Union forces capture Fort Henry in Tennessee, thus opening the door to securing the Mississippi river. -

Union forces capture Fort Donelson in Tennessee which was the ast primary confederate fort on the Mississippi; leaving the river in the Union control. -
Battle of Shiloh
The Battle of Shiloh is the first major battle in Tennessee. Union forces led by General Grant defeat the confederates. -
The Battle of Seven Pines
The commander of the confederate army in Virginia is wounded and replaced by Robert E. Lee. General Lee renames the army "Army of Northern Virginia." -
The Seven Days Battle Ends
General Lee attacks General McClellan at the Potomac River and pushes the union forces away from the confederate capital. -
The Second Battle of Bull Run
The union was once again defeated at same site as before. -
The Battle of Antietam
The bloodiest dingle day battle of the Civil War. Resulted in a union victory. Following this victory President Lincoln introduced the Emancipation Proclamation. -

General Lee once again defeats the union forces after they tried to cross the Potomac. -

The union defeats the confederates at Stones river and opens up Tennessee to be captured by the union. -

Union forces officially capture Vicksburg, Mississippi thus giving the union complete control of the Mississippi River. -

Abraham Lincoln delivers the Gettysburg Address at the dedication of the Soldiers' National Cemetery. -

Union forces break through confederate siege of the city and gain control thus forcing the confederate army further back into the south. -
