Japan Invades Manchuria
The Kwantung Army of Japan's Empire invaded Manchuria immediately after the Mukden Incident. Japanese then established a "puppet state" known as Manchukuo, and their stay lasted until the end of World War II. -
Italy attacks Ethiopia
The League of Nations faced another trial; Benito Mussolini, the Fascist leader of Italy, now adopted Adolf Hitler's plans. He also looked to expand German territories by acquiring all territories it considered German, and he ordered for an invasion. -
Germany Occupies Rhineland
Germany claimed the treaty was hostile to them and Hitler used excuse to send German troops into the Rhineland. German military forces entered into Rhineland, and there was a remilitarization by the Germans, too. -
Japan invades China
The Japapanese invaded China; fighting began with the Battle of Lugou Bridge. Chinese forces were not able to resist the Japanese military. The Japanese Kwantung Army turned this rather small incident into a major war between Japan and China even though their gvernment did not formally declare war. -
Germany annexes Austria
German troops march into Austria to take control of the German-speaking nation for the Third Reich. Austrian Nazis had conspired for the second time in four years to seize the Austrian government by force uniting it with Nazi Germany. -
Germany takes Sudetenland
Initially put under military administration, the Sudetenland was given to the Germans. Leaders of Nazi Germany, Great Britain, France and Italy signed an agreement allowing Nazis to annex this a region of Czechoslovakia that was home to many ethnic Germans. -
Germany seizes Czechoslovakia
HItler invaded the non German country of Czechslovakia, but Chamberlain had only appeased Hitler by giving him the Sudetenland areas of Czechoslovakia. Chamberlain promised to defend Poland if the Nazis invaded because of this. -
Italy conquers Albania
The Italian dictator decided to proceed with his own annexation of Albania as a military campaign. Italy's King Victor Emmanuel III criticized the plan to take Albania as an unnecessary risk.
