European nations wanted to gain control of Africa in order to take advantage of the raw materials there and use it as a market for industrial products. Disease and river systems that were very difficult for Europeans to navigate made european travel in the center of Africa very imposible. THen, in the 1800's, a new kind of technoology, the steam powered riverboat was introduced and this allowed the europeans to travel trhoughout the interior of Africa and take advantage of the trade routes. -
East India Co. Colapses due to Sepoy Rebellion; British Raj Begins
A rumor spread throughout the indian soldiers, sepoys, that thier Enfield Rifles had been greased with pork and beef fat. the hindus of the group consider the cow as a sacred animal and the muslims don't eat pork. the sepoys refused use them and they would have hold them in their mouths. The sepoys were put in jail, and soon rebelled. The east india company could not take control, the british gov sent troops to help and took command. The company had collapsed due to the enfiled rifles prduced. -

The Suez canals construction was supported by Muhammed Alis grandson, Isma'il. Like his grandfather, he wanted to modernize egypt. the canal was a human made waterway. it cut through the isthus of Suez. It was constrcted using egyptian labor and french money. The canal helped britain gain access more easily to asian and african colonies that belonged to them, modernization projects such as the canal's construction were very expensive and led to immense debt for the egyptians, $450 million. -
Berlin Conference Convenses to Discus Terms for AFrican Colonization
European nations were very eager to claim african terriotory. This urge for african land begain around 1880. 14 European countries ggatehred at the berlin confreence to establish rules for the division of africa. This meeting was held to prevent further conflict. No african ruler was invited to attend. The European nations divided the continet without considering the effects it would have on the african and without taking linguistic and ethnic groups into thought. -
Queen Liliuokalani takes the throne of Hawaii
Queen Liliuokalani wished to establish a new constitution that would invcrease her power as a monarch. The constitution would give the hawaiians more political power, at the expense of the wealthy planters. American business men devised a plan to overthrow the queen. She was then removed from powerin 1893. -
Ethiopians defeat the invading Italians at the Battle of Adwa
Menelik II, Eitheopias emporor at the time found differences in the wording of the treaty he signed with italy. He had signed the treaty thinking he was only giving up a small amount of eitheopia, but the treaty actually stated that italy would claim the entire country. Menelik delcared wasr in 1896, the battle of adwa began. He played the countries against eachother, strategically. Eitheopia was one of the only countries that could resist european rule. -
Spanish-American War breaks out; Puerto Rico, Spain, and the Philippines taken from Spain
The spanish- american war began when united states joined the cuban war in hopes of independecne. As a result, the Us obtained the phillipine islands, puerto rico, and Guam. The fillipinos were free from spanish rule, but many were unhappy that the americans had taken thier place. Emilio Aguinaldo, leader of fillipino nationalist, argued that they had been promised independence after the spanish american war. The phillipine republic was then established. -
Boer War in South Africa
The Boer war is also known as the South African War, it was also the first modern "total' war, instead of the traditional battlefield methods that had been used in wars before, Boers laungched commando raids and used guerilla tactics to fight the british. The british would kill everyone, regardless of their age or gender. The britisish reliated by burning boer farms and imprisoning woman and children n concentration camps. The british then won the war, eventually. -
Most of Frica is under European Control
As a result of the berlin conference which took place in 1884-5, the african continent had been divided up for europeans to control. by 1914, the only conuntries that remained were liberia and eitheopia. Eitheopia's independece was thanks to the actions of Menelik II, the emperor who played eureopan nations against eachother and developed weapons to protect eitheopia from the conquest by the europeans.
