Harriet Tubman
When Harriet Tubman was born her real name was Araminta Ross but while being a slave she married a free black man named John Tubman. Then one day Harriet was asked to help punish another slave and she refused when the other slave ran the slave owner threw an iron weight and missed and hit Tubman! One day she was scared that she was going to be sold so she and her brothers but her brothers got scared and turned back Harriet kept going and made it out and got a good job. -

In 1861 there was alot of tension between the northern and southern United States Abraham Lincoln became president in 1860. the civil war lasted from 1861-65. 4 years of the battle are now marked as historic places.

Plessey v. Ferguson
The state of Louisiana had a law where blacks had a bus and whites had a bus. Homer Adolph Plessey was white but had a little black tent to his skin so they said he had to ride in the black bus he refused and was arrested. -

Emmett Till
Emmett Till was a 14 year old boy that was murdered because he had flirted with a white cashier lady at a grocery store.4 days after 2 white men kidnapped Emmett and beat him and then shot him in the head. Both men were tried with murder an all white male jury was there. Emmett’s murder and open casket funeral made the civil rights movement stronger. -
Rosa Parks
A 42 year old woman named Rosa Parks had worked as a seamstress she boarded a Montgomery bus for a ride home after a long day at work. She decided that everyone needed to be equal so she sat in the middle row just behind the 10 rows reserved for whites. All of the seats became full when a white man boarded the bus driver insisted that Rosa give up her seat and give it to him Parks quietly refused to get up. She was arrested and convicted of violation of the law known as the “Jim crow law.” -
I Have A Dream Speech
1963 Martin Luther king gave his speech for freedom he began his speech with the help of slaves, issued by Abraham Lincoln and later mentions that after being freed from slavery, blacks are still not free, black people are not fighting for their own satisfaction to fight until they feel content with what they have accomplished black people are fighting for continuous freedom and equality not to be stopped with kings speech -
Sixteenth Baptist Church.
As children that attended sixteenth Baptist Church got ready for annual youth day a bomb exploded in the stairwell. Killing four girls and injuring others that was also in the building. Violence broke out after words and that resulted in the death of 2 African American boys. -
Martin Luther King Jr.
Martin Luther King was killed by a single shot that hit him in the face and neck. When he got shot he was standing on a balcony getting ready to lead a peaceful march in support of striking sanitation workers. He died in St. Joseph Hospital. The victims had thrown the gun near the scene of the murder and sped away in a white mustang.
