Jackie Robinson
Jackie Robinson had started off on a African American league for baseball. He was later noticed for his great plays, he got drafted for the Brooklyn Dodgers. This made him the very first African American to play in Major League baseball. -
Executive Order 9981
Truman signed the Executive Order 9981. The Order declared that white and black people will be treated equally if in armed services no matter what race, color, religion, or national origin. -
Emmett Till Murder
While visiting family in Mississippi, fourteen-year-old Emmett Till got kidnapped. He got brutally beat, shot, and then dumbed into a river for whistling at a white women. Two men, J.W. Milam and Roy Bryant, got arrested for murder. -
Rosa Parks's Bus Boycott
Rosa Parks, member of the NAACP, refused to give up her seat. She sat in the "colored section" of the bus and a white passenger had tried to kick her out of the seat. When Rosa was arrested the black community started a bus boycott. This lasted for more than a year until the buses are desegrated on December 21, 1956. -
James Meredith's Enrollment
James Meredith applied for the University of Mississippi. The University decided to accept him because of his outstanding work. When James got enrolled, riots broke out every where causing the president to send 5000 federal troops. -
"I have a dream"
On this date, many white and blacks marched with over a group of 250,000 people. They marched for freedom and equal treatment for black and whites. Martin Luther King Junior made a speech saying he had a dream that one day whites and blackes will be treated as if they were all one color. -
Sixteenth Street Baptist Church Explosion
In Birmingham Alabama, four young girls (Denise McNair, Cynthia Wesley, Carole Robertson, and Addie Mae Collins) got killed by an explosion from a bomb. Someone planted the bomb in the church because the person heard that people keep having Civil Rights meetings there. Riots broke out all over the place. -
The Civil Rights Act of 1964
The Civil Rights Act of 1964 This act prevents employment discrimination on race, sex, religion, color, or national origins. They passed a final version of the Civil Rights Act on Febuary 10, 1964. They started another act in 1968. -
Voting Rights Act
A group of black men trying to vote got beaten by Alabama state troopers. President Johnson had noticed this incident and decided to pass a law saying all African Americans are now allowed to safely vote. -
Martin Luther King Jr. assassination
The Nobel Peace Prize winner, Martin Luther, died from a gun shot from James Earl Ray. This incident caused riots all over the place between whites and blackes. James Earl Ray got tried and pleaded guilty and was sentenced to prison for 99 years.
