13th Amendment
Lincoln pushed to pass the 13th amendment. The 13th Amendment was created to legally abolish slavery. But there were exceptions: slavery would still be able to be used for punishment if an African American were convicted. -
Mississippi Black Codes
Black Codes granted rights to African Americans such as the right to marry or own property. These codes also denied rights to African Americans such as serving on juries and recognizing their testimonies. Black Codes codes limited the mobility and leisure of African Americans. -
14th Amendment
The fourteenth amendment was passed in order to protect the rights of any one born in the United States. This amendment stated that anyone born in the United States was a citizen and had the right to equal rights and their rights could not be denied. The purpose of this amendment was to abolish the Black Codes. -
Mississippi Lynchings
Mississippi had the highest lynching from 1882-1968 with 581. Georgia was second with 531, and Texas was third with 493. 79% of lynching happened in the South. -

Jim Crow laws created forced separation in the public school system, kept African Americans from riding in the same section of public buses as whites. -

Harlem Renaissance was an African American cultural movement which was known for an increase in art, music and literature in (1920s-1930s). -
Tuskegee Airman
The Tuskegee Army field became a center to train African Americans to fly fighter and bomber aircrafts. -

Black Lives Matter is an activist movement within the African American Community. It campaigned against violence. The regularly spoke out against police brutality against African Americans. The movement took off in 2013 when Zimmerman shot an African American in 2012.
