British wanted to restore exiled ruler on the throne in Kabul so they launched the first Anglo-Afghan war because they thought Dost was unable to resist Russia penetration. -
Afghanistan Second War
In November 1875, Lord Lytton was appointed governor general and he was concerned about Russia influence growing, and he notified Dost Mohammed son, who got the throne when his dad died, he refused to let Lytton enter and his envoy, Neville Chamberlain, that made him launch the 2nd war with a British invasion. -

An outbreak of WW1, there had a wide spread of Ottoman Turkey against Britain. The ruler got assassinated on Feb 20, 1919, from persons in the anti-British movement. In his coronation address, he said they had independence. A peace treaty was signed recognizing the independence.
