  • Baba and Ali Cross Paths

    In Afghanistan, 1933 was the year that Zahir Shah became the ruler of Afghanistan for the next 40 years and the year Baba was born. 1933 is also the day that Baba's father took in an orphan boy, "that boy was Ali" (25). This was a key year for Baba. Ali and Baba became very close. They were always playing with each other and soon became friends. Baba has a strong bond with Ali because his father decided to take in the Hazara boy whose parents had been murdered.

  • Dhoud Khan Takes the Throne in a Coup

  • Hassan Gets Raped

    Amir had just won the kite tournament, the last step was to catch the kite that had been cut. Hassan gladly went to catch the kite for Amir. Unfortunately, Aseef had other plans for the Hassan. Aseef cornered Hassan in an ally and told his friends "There's nothing sinful about teaching a lesson to a disrespectful donkey" (75). Although raping someone is sinful, Aseef believes that he is above that. He proves that there is a difference between the higher and lower classes.

  • Hassan and Ali Leave

    This was a few days after Amir's birthday. Ali and Hassan knew that they "[couldn't] live [there] anymore" (106). This broke the relationship between Amir and Hassan. They both knew that Hassan had to go, and the inevitable happened.

  • Amir and Baba Move to America

    When the Russians took over Afghanistan, Amir and Baba escaped to America. Even though he had a hard time adjusting to his new life, "Baba loved the idea of America" (125). This move took a toll on Baba. He was now in a lower class where nobody knew who he was. It also gave Amir the chance to forget about everything tha had ahappened in Agfghanistan.

  • Amir Graduates From High School

    While still setlleing into life in America, Amir "graduated from high school at the age of twenty..." (131) This is a very important time in Amir's life because he has accomplished something that can lead to great futures. This is also around the time where he decides to major in English for college

  • Amir Meets Soraya

    This is a key event in the plot because this is when Amir meets his future wife, Soraya Taheri. Amir referes to her has his "Swap Meet Princess" (142). Amir finds someone else in his his life besides Baba

  • Baba is Diagnosed With Cancer

    This is a crucial plot point because it shows how vunerable Baba can be. It also shows Baba's wish to die at the right time and not get chemotherapy to prolong his life. He stands his ground and says "...no chemo medication for me" (156). Baba's unwillingness to live his life artuficially shows the difference between Baba and those who wish to live.

  • Amir's First Novel is Published

    This is a very important milestone in Amir's life because Amir's goal of being a published author had come true. He had accomplished something great and wished Baba "could have seen [him]" and how he had become successful (183). Having his work out in the world was one of Amir's milestones that gave him enough confidence to continue his work.

  • Soviet Troops Leave Afghanistan

  • Amir and Soraya are Infertile

    The inability to have a child makes the relatipnship between Amir and Soraya more fragile. When Soraya heres that she cannot concieve a child, "Soraya cried all the way home [from the doctors office]" (186). The disability she has affected her and her family greatly. It hsowed how many holes the family relationship had.

  • Amir Gets a Phone Call From Rahim Kahn

    Amir gets a phone call from Rahim Kahn who was living in Pakistan. He calls Amir and tells him that "there is a way to be good again" (192). This one sentence tells Amir that Rahim Kahn new about all of the lies Amir had told. And with this one simple sentence, Amir decided to fly out to Pakistsn.

  • Amir Learns that Hassan is his Brother

    This relevation makes Amir very angry. He is so mad that no one had told him about his relationship to Hassan. He finds out that his "whole life is a big...lie" (223). This secret that had been kept for so long and now finally revealed, has brought great anger to Amir. But, this also helps push Amir into finding Hassan's son.

  • Amir Returns Home

    This day was a joyous day for Amir. He had finally retured to California with Sorhab. "On a warm day in August 2001" Amir returned to Soraya safe and sound.
