Proclamation of Neutrality
This was a formal announcement by George Washington that declared America neutral in the conflict that was happening between Britain and France. -
XYZ Affair
American diplomats were sent to France in July to discuss problems that could lead to war. Before they got to negotiate, they were confronted by three French diplomats who bribed the Americans for money before entry. This angered the Americans who felt offended by the bribe. This led to the undeclared Quasi War. -
Convention of 1800
This convention was held to form a treaty that would settle hostilities that erupted during the Quasi War. -
Louisiana Purchase
America bought the Louisiana territory from France for a whopping 15 million dollars. This purchase added 825,000 square miles of land to America. The treaty was signed May 2nd, but the land wasn't ours until December 1803. -
Embargo Act
Passed by Thomas Jefferson, the Embargo Act made any exports from America illegal. He wanted Britain and France to respect American rights. The act backfired and ended up hurting the economy badly. -
War of 1812
Declared on June 18th, 1812, the War of 1812 was the effect of the impressment by British naval troops toward American mariners. It lasted until December 24th when it officially ended. -
Treaty of Ghent
The Treaty of Ghent marked the end of the War of 1812. America and Britain have been peaceful ever since. -
Monroe Doctrine
This was written to stop European countries from coming to North America to colonize land, and if they did it would be looked at as an act of aggression.
