The First Fleet
The First fleet is a name given to the eleven ships that left Brittan to find Australia on 13 may 1788 there were 504 male convicts and 192 female convicts. The ship was commanded by Captain Arthur Philip. The journey began with fine weather, and thus the convicts were allowed on deck. On 3 June 1787 the fleet anchored at Santa Cruz at Tenerife. Captain Sturt
Sturt was born on 28 April, 1795 in Bengal, India. He was the eldest of eight sons and one of thirteen children. Sturt showed a keen interest in exploring the as yet unmapped country and its rivers. With Governor Darling's approval he set out to solve its mysteries. In 1828 he discovered the Darling River and in January 1830 the Murray River, which he followed until he reached present day Goolwa.
