    Coral Way Elementary Way
    After the Cuban revolution there was an influx of Cubans immigrating to Miami. To accommodate these students, a bilingual and bicultural program was implemented at Coral Way Elementary School. This program is considered the first of its kind. It has impacted multicultural education by providing a blueprint for future bicultural programs and highlighting the importance of acknowledging culture.
  • Civil Rights Act

    Civil Rights Act
    The Civil Rights Act is enacted which makes it illegal to discriminate against someone based on race, sex, religion or nationality. This act was the first step to providing underserved populations from different cultures an education and protecting students from discrimination in the classroom.
  • Immigration Act of 1965

    Immigration Act of 1965
    The Immigration Act of 1965 is signed by Lyndon Johnson. This act abolishes the National Origins Forum which established an immigration quota based on the current proportions of the population. As a result, a large number of Asians and Latin Americans immigrated to the States. The increase of immigrant studies led to a stronger need for multicultural education.
  • Equality of Educational opportunity Study

    James S. Coleman conducts a study called The Equality of Educational Opportunity Study that highlights the benefits integrated schools have on African American students. The results leads to some schools busing students to integrated schools in order for them to receive the benefits. This is important because it was the first step to providing these students with a better education.
  • Refugee Education Act

    Refugee Education Act
    Jimmy Carter signs the Refugee Education Act into law to accommodate the Cuban and Haitian immigrants in Florida brought on the Mariel Boatlift. The act impacted multicultural education by providing specific rights for refugees.
  • Refugee Act of 1980

    Refugee Act of 1980
    Jimmy Carter signs The Refugee Act of 1980 into law which is an extension of the Immigration Act of 1965. The act allows the admission of refugees for humanitarian reasons. Due to the increase of refugees, the need for effective multicultural education is increased.
  • Plyler v. Doe

    Plyler v. Doe
    In the ruling of Plyler v. Doe, the Supreme Court decided that access to public education cannot be denied to undocumented children because it violates the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment and they cannot be charged tuition fees. This impacted multicultural education because it provided protections and opportunities for education to undocumented students.
  • America's Schools Act

    America's Schools Act
    Bill Clinton signs the Improving America's Schools Act which increased funding for immigration and bilingual education. The increase of funding led to an improvement of multicultural education.
  • Proposition 227

    Proposition 227
    Proposition 227 is passed which requires all public schools to be taught in English, prohibiting teachers from speaking any other language in the classroom. This negatively impacts multicultural education because it supports assimilation rather than celebration of cultures different than that of English speaking cultures.
  • Demographic Milestone

    Demographic Milestone
    According to demographic reports, there were more minority students than Caucasian students in K-12 public school classrooms. This report reiterates the importance of multicultural education since there are a large number of different cultures in the classroom.
