The XYZ affair
The XYZ incident was a diplomatic incident between the United States and France in 1797. Three representatives of the French foreign minister demanded huge bribes from the diplomatic envoys of the American President John Adams who came to the country for peace talks as a condition for continuing the negotiations. The disclosure of this event triggered an anti-french wave in the United States, which further worsened the relationship between the United States and France. -
Alien and Sedition Acts
The Alien and Sedition Acts were a series of four laws passed by the U.S. Congress in 1798 amid widespread fear that war with France was imminent. After the XYZ affair, the Federalists, aware that French military successes in Europe had been greatly facilitated by political dissidents in invaded countries, sought to prevent such subversion in the United States and adopted the Alien and Sedition Acts as part of a series of military preparedness measures. -
