• SOCIAL SECURITY ACT

    • enacted August 14, 1935 by Franklin Roosevelt -a social welfare legislative act which created the Social Security system in the United States. -The older population have something to live on when they can no longer work.
  • FAIR LABOR STANDARDS ACT

    1938
    -Drafted in 1932 by Senator Hugo Black
    -The FLSA introduced the forty-hour work week,established a national minimum wage, guaranteed "time-and-a-half" for overtime in certain jobs,and prohibited most employment of minors in "oppressive child labor", a term that is defined in the statute.
    - Without it work places could be unstable and people would have a harder time finding work. The pay would also waver or not even be there for some workers.
  • EQUAL PAY ACT

    -Signed into Law June 10, 1963 by John F. Kennedy
    - amending the Fair Labor Standards Act, aimed at abolishing wage disparity based on sex
    - Pay is fair and balenced, people can make a living the same as the rest. Not like the old days during women's sufferage and segregation.
  • CLEAN AIR ACT

    -Signed into law by President Lyndon B. Johnson on December 17, 1963
    -a United States federal law designed to control air pollution on a national level. It requires the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to develop and enforce regulations to protect the public from airborne contaminants known to be hazardous to human health
    -Without the act our atmosphere could be like LAs completely brown and contaminated.
  • CLEAN WATER ACT

    -Overridden by the House and became law on October 18, 1972 (247-23)
    - is the primary federal law in the United States governing water pollution
    -without it we wouldn't have our beautiful clean lakes and oceans.
  • ENDANGERED SPECIES ACT

    -Signed into law by President Richard Nixon on December 28, 1973
    -is one of the few dozens of United States environmental laws passed in the 1970s. Signed into law by President Richard Nixon on December 28, 1973, it was designed to protect critically imperiled species from extinction as a "consequence of economic growth and development untempered by adequate concern and conservation."
    - All of these acts are in place to save the environment.
  • EMPLOYMENT RETIRMENT INCOME SECURITY ACT

    -Signed into law by President Gerald Ford on September 2, 1974
    -establishes minimum standards for pension plans in private industry and provides for extensive rules on the federal income tax effects of transactions associated with employee benefit plans
    - Elderly can enjoy life instead of working till they pass.
  • FEDERAL PRIVACY ACT

    -Signed into law by President Gerald R. Ford on December 31, 1974
    -establishes a Code of Fair Information Practice that governs the collection, maintenance, use, and dissemination of personally identifiable information about individuals that is maintained in systems of records by federal agencies.
    -All citizens have a right to either put out or conceal information unless it is harmful to another, until that happens we all can have privacy in our records.
  • 11. RESOURCE RECOVERY AND CONSERVATION ACT

    -Signed into law by President Gerald Ford on October 21, 1976
    - enacted in 1976, is the principal federal law in the United States governing the disposal of solid waste and hazardous waste.
    -Like the clean air and water act, this saves our natural earth.
  • DRUG-FREE WORKPLACE ACT

    -1988
    -requires some Federal contractors and all Federal grantees to agree that they will provide drug-free workplaces as a precondition of receiving a contract or grant from a Federal agency.
    -Our beloved country does not need to be ran by a irresponsible adult
  • EMPLOYEE POLYGRAPH PROTECTION ACT

    -1988
    - generally prevents employers from using polygraph (lie detector) tests, either for pre-employment screening or during the course of employment, with certain exemptions.
    - Job interviews should be naturally professional, there shouldn't be a need to bring in technology to find out if they are truthful.
  • FAMILY AND MEDICAL LEAVE ACT

    -Signed into law by President Bill Clinton on February 5, 1993
    -requiring covered employers to provide employees job-protected and unpaid leave for qualified medical and family reasons. Qualified medical and family reasons include: personal or family illness, family military leave, pregnancy, adoption, or the foster care placement of a child
    - No parent or adult has to worry about what could happen without working because of a medical condition that they can not control.
