Battle Of Bull Run
The First Battle of Bull Run also known as the battle of Manassas was the first major battle of the Civil War it ended in a Confederate victory and showed that the Confederates did have a presence in the war and were not going to go down without a fight. -
Tom And Eb Leave For The Army
In August 1861 both Tom and Abby left for the battle they had both sided with the Union and were excited to go out and fight for a cause that they believed in. They are also the first in the family to leave for the war. -
Matt Creigton Has A heart Attack
In March 1862 the head of the family Matt Creighton had a heart attack this significantly altered the course of Jenny and Jethro Creigton They had to look out and maintain the field and also make sure there was food for the family. -
Tom Creigton Dies
On April 6th 1862 the family is notified of Tom's death In Pittsburg Landing. This is the first death of the Civil War for the Creighton family. -
Lincolin Sings The Emancipation Proclamation
The Emancipation Proclamation or Proclamation 95 was an executive order issued by Abraham Lincoln on September 22nd was effective on January 1st 1863 it freed more than 3.5 million enslaved African Americans in the Confederate States. -
Eb Carron Deserts
In February of 1863 Eb Carron deserted the Union Army after witnessing Tom's death and the death of many other young men when he was found by Jethro Who described him as only a skeleton of his past self but, eventually he was reinstated into the army it was only given a little punishment. -
Battle of Gettysburg
The Battle of Gettysburg fought from July 1st to July 3rd 1863 is considered the most important battle of the Civil War; it was considered a major turning point and was also a union victory but it did not come at an easy price. After 3 days of fighting the casualties for the union was 23,049. -
Shad And Jenny Get Married
On August 14th Shad and Jenny get married. They do not end up coming home until the war is over and after they came home Jethro moves in with the new couple to finish his education. -
Grant Takes Control Of The Union Army
On March 12th 1864 Ulysses S. Grant, who was the head of operations for the Union in the West, was promoted by Abraham Lincoln to the general of the Union Army. -
Union Troops Occupied Atlanta
On August 28th 1864 General William Tecumseh Sherman laid Siege to Atlanta cutting off food supply and shelling the city making the Confederates Retreat this turned out to be a blow the Confederates never recovered from and may have even cost them the war. -
General Sherman Begins His March To The Sea
On November 15th General Sherman began his March to the Sea and practiced Total War which is the act of destroying everything in your path this was the first time Total War was ever used and caused controversy even in the North many thought it was uncalled for to destroy innocent people's farms and houses however this greatly affected the Confederates food supply and economy which they were never able to recover from. -
Lee Surenders To Grant
On April 9th 1865 Robert E Lee surrendered to General Sherman in Appomattox Court House in General Lee's home state of Virginia; this effectively ended the war. The south agreed to rejoin the Union and slavery was abolished in all of America. -
Abrahm Lincolin Is Shot And Killed
On April 15th 1865 only a few days after the war had ended President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth .
