    Australian citizen act listened to the indigenous Australians and let them vote if the were enrolled for state elections.

    A referendum was held - 90.7% of Australians voted yes to count indigenous Australians in the census and to give the commonwealth government the power to make new laws for them.

    Neville Bonner became the first indigenous member of parliament when he filled a casual senate vacancy.
