Boston Massacre
[Social] A group of British soldiers killed five colonists after being provoked by a patriot mob throwing sticks and stones at the soldiers. The Americans took the killing hard and tensions rose, resulting in stern letters to the king and rallies. -
First Continental Congress
[Diplomatic/military] A meeting of the best and brightest politicians in America gathered in secret to decide whether independence was the best option or if it was the only option. A draft of a declaration of rights was created at the first Continental Congress. Those in attendance included George Washington, John Adams, Patrick Henry, and 53 other delegates. -
Battles of Lexington and Concord
[Diplomatic/Military] The first battles in the Revolutionary War were those of Lexington and Concord. The patriots took the victory, setting the tone for the rest of the battles to come. -
Declaration of Independence
[Political] The colonies of America were getting fed up with the discriminations set by the British. After the king rejected the colonists' attempts to gain representation in Parliament, conflict began. The Continental Congress decided that it was time to declare independence from Britain. -
Vermont is 1st State to Abolish Slavery
[Social] The abolition of slavery begins with Vermont, who in their 1777 constitution banned slavery. Then in 1791 Vermont became America's 14th state to join the Union. -
George Washington became First President
[Political] After the Revolutionary War was won by the American Colonies, a president needed to be chosen to run the country. George Washington was a prestigious general during the war, so he was the first choice among possible candidates. Washington was unanimously voted into presidency in 1789. -
Aaron Burr is elected to Senate
[Political] Aaron Burr was running against Philip Schuyler for a place in the Senate. Since Philip Schuyler was Alexander Hamilton's father-in-law, a tough rivalry between Burr and Hamilton was created when Burr beat Schuyler. -
Cotton Gin is Invented
[Cultural/Technological] Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin, which revolutionized the cotton industry by increasing production greatly. This invention also caused a need for slaves during a decline. -
Philip Schuyler was elected to the Senate
[Political] When Aaron Burr ran for a seat in the Senate again, he lost the re-election to Philip Schuyler. Burr put the blame on Hamilton for tearing apart his reputation. -
John Adams became the 2nd President
[Political] George Washington refused to run for a third term of presidency, so vice president John Adams decided to run as the Federalists party candidate. He won the election, giving him the title of 2nd president and first president associating with a political party. -

[Social] John Adams was the first president to live in the Executive Mansion, or as we know today, the White House. -
Thomas Jefferson became the 3rd President
[Political] Thomas Jefferson and Aaron Burr were fairly equal opponents in terms of popularity. When the votes got the the Electoral College, they were equal. Hamilton was able to convince the House of Representatives that Jefferson would be the better president. Aaron Burr became vice president and the rivalry between Burr and Hamilton was strengthened. -
Louisiana Purchase
[Diplomatic/Military] The United States bought Louisiana territory from France. The territory included 15 present-day states. The purchase was cheap for how much land it provided; the US paid less than 3 cents per acre. -
Burr-Hamilton Duel
[Social] When Burr was not voted to be governor of New York, he blamed Hamilton. To defend his honor, Burr challenged Hamilton to a duel. The duel ended with Burr shooting and killing Hamilton. The public called it murder, but all duel regulations were followed so no charges were applied. -
Webster American-English Dictionary Published
[Social] Noah Webster published his first American-English Dictionary, which made the spelling of English words more "Americanized". Aaron Burr was a great advocator of education, including women's education, which was almost unheard of at the time. -
The Embargo Act of 1807
[Economy] Thomas Jeffereson sponsored this act that made France and Britain respect American rights. Britain and France were in war and both sides didn't want the other side the get American supplies. Therefore America banned exports. -
US Slave Trade with Africa Ends
[Cultural/Technological] After the Slave trade Act of 1794 (banned the building or outfitting of American ships for slave trade), Congress took another step toward abolition of slavery and outlawed the importation of slaves. -

[Political] James Madison of the Democratic-Republican Party defeated Charles Pinckney of the Federalist party, becoming the 4th president of the United States. -

[Economy] The first true financial crisis in United States history was a result of global market adjustments from the Napoleonic Wars and unrestrained issue of paper money. -
Relief for Public Land Debtors Act
[Economy] In response to the Panic of 1819, Congress passed an act that allowed people who owed money on land purchased from the government to keep the land already paid for and give back the remaining land. Most everyone supported the act.
