A total war

  • Global scope

More countries involved than in any previous war, around 50 million soldiers and almost 100 million people in total were mobilised
  • Mobilisation of the population and economy for military purposes

It was a well-planned conflict that required state intervention in the economy to mobilise production, science and technology for military purposes. Military industrial complexes appeared, this led to major changes in the organisation of production and huge increases in the workforce in the countries at war. GB, US and Japan saw the large-scale mobilisation of women and their entry into the workface, while Germany relied on the exploitation of foreign workers.
