Mao Zedong comes to power in China. He turned it into the People’s Republic of China since he was a communist leader. -

President Truman approved the Hydrogen Bomb project. He wanted to do whatever was needed to stay a world power. -

The Nuclear Arms Race tests 11 atomic bombs at a test site in Nevada. It showed that the U.S. was catching up to Russia. -
Geneva Conference
The 17th parallel line is drawn between north and South Vietnam. North in communist and south in democratic. Eventually the country is going to be unified once more. -
Eisenhower Declares use of Domino Theory in Asia
Eisenhower sates that the Domino Theory has to be used in regards to Asia. He says that if one country falls to communism then they all will fall. -

Abolished the “separate but equal” notion. 12 million children in 21 states were impacted by the decision to outlaw segregation. -

Diem rejects the decision at the Geneva conference and does not hold free elections to become president. Either way, the United States supports him. -

African Americans boycotted the bus system for over a year because of the seat segregation. Rosa Parks was the face of the movement. -
Russia aids Afghanistan
September 4, 1956: Russia sent military aid to Afghanistan. This caused the U.S. to become worried that yet another country would fall to communism. -
Hungarian rebellion supressed
Rebellion put down in communist Hungary. This showed that the U.S. was becoming successful in stopping the spread of communism. -
Begining of Suez Canal Crisis
The Suez Canal Crisis began. Israel attacked Egypt to take control of the canal, Egypt still took control though. -

9 African American teenagers were placed into Little Rock High school to try to desegregate the rest of schools -

Meant to increase the number of colored voters. Tried to even the playing field between African American and white voters. -

Sputnik was launched into orbit. This was the first satellite to go into space and caused the United States to put more attention on space research. -
Castro takes control of Cuba
Fidel Castro took control of Cuba. Cuba became a communist country and was a shock to the United States because Cuba was so close to them. -

They opposed Diem being president and opposed the United States interference. -
The Sit in of Greensboro, North Carolina
Non violent resistance of blacks in sitting areas once segregated. Later the court system ruled against any form of segregation in public areas. -
Black power symbol
Freedom riders develop symbol and saying “Black Power.” This motivated and inspired many African Americas quickly becoming the symbol of the movement. -

Blacks and whites rode buses through South to move Movement into the deep south and raise awareness for civil rights cause. -
Bay of Pigs
The United States trained the Cuban Americans to invade Cuba. The invasion goes terribly wrong and the United States has to retreat. The United States did not want ties to the assassination of Castro. -
Relization of Wasted Funds
Senator Mike Mansfield says that Diem had wasted $2 billion that the U.S. had spent there. The United was just losing money and not accomplishing anything there. -
March On Washington
250,000 whites walked to D.C. for equality. Martin Luther king was the face of the movement and this was one of the most pivotal, famous displays in the south. -

This meant that Lyndon B Johnson would become president. LBJ was more involved on the home front and was not prepared to fight in Vietnam -
Childrens March
Children marched through the streets protesting for their equal rights. Police officers beat them and sprayed them with fire hoses in retaliation. -

Prohibited discrimination because of race, religion, gender, etc. This is what many of the African Americans were ultimately working toward. -

Outlawed discriminatory practices in voting such as poll taxes and denying the right for an African American to vote because of his/ her race. -

The U.S. wanted to stop movement through the Mugia Pass since it was a main route through Laos and South Vietnam. -

The ground tunnels are found all around Vietnam by an attack that was meant for Saigon. -
Tet Offensive
Communist forces took over hundreds of cities in South Vietnam including Saigon. U.S. forces took back every city but it was still seen as a loss by the public. -

The United States and South Vietnam try to take back all the area seized by the communists. -
Nixon begins secret bombings of Cambodia
He wanted to destroy all communist trade routes in Cambodia. Nixon did this without the permission from Congress or with the American people knowing. -

America activated the draft. It was lottery based but a lot more young men went then older men.
