  • Tiananmen Square Protests

    Chinese students staged pro-democracy protests in Tiananmen Square. Chinese tanks and soldiers came into Beijing, killed hundreds of protesters and imprisoned many more, and ended the demonstrations. This led to Bush suspending arms sales to China.

  • Invasion of Panama

    President Bush sent more than 12,000 U.S. troops to invade Panama and arrest the Dictator Manuel Noriega. He was tried in the U.S. and was sentenced 40 years for drug trafficking.

  • U.S. and South Africa

    Due to our opposition to apartheid in South Africa, Congress imposed economic sanctions on them. After Mandela (Leader of the antiapartheid movement) was released from jail in 1990, he met with President Bush and discussed ways to bring an end to apartheid and introduce democracy.

  • Iraq invades Kuwait

    Saddam Hussein sends Iraq Army to invade Kuwait in order to gain control of their rich oil-fields.

  • Operation Desert Storm Begins

    Operation Desert Storm was an American-led attack on Iraqi forces.

  • Operation Restore Hope

    United States Marines were sent to Somalia to establish a cease-fire between warlords and to deliver food to hundreds of thousands of starving people.

  • Al Qaeda bombs World Trade Center

    Al Qaeda exploded a truck bomb in the parking garage beneath the World Trade Center, killing 6 and injuring over a thousand.

  • U.S. Involvement in Haiti

    Haitian President Jean Bertrand Aristide was overthrown in a military coup in 1991. The Clinton Administration then sent American troops to Haiti to restore Aristide to power.

  • U.S. Embassy Bombings

    In 1998, car bombs were detonated within minutes of each other the American Embassys at Dar es Salaam and Nairobi, killing 225 and injuring more than 5500 more.

  • Attempted peace at Camp David

    President Clinton invited Palestinian Leader Yasir Arafat and Israeli prime minister Ehud Barak to Camp David to work on a peace-agreement. They almost did, but Arafat was not satisfied with any proposals.

  • September 11th Attacks

    On September 11, 2011, al Qaeda hijacked four commercial airplanes and crashed two into the World Trade Center, and one into the pentagon. The fourth plane was diverted by passengers who refused to allow the hijackers to target another building. Nearly 3000 people died due to these attacks.
