Period: to
Westward Expansion
Americans wanted to expand and gain control of the continent. They wanted to create a place for self government and liberty. They expanded the nation from the Atlantic to the Pacific Coast. I think this is sectionalism because when they wanted to move west they did not care about the other nations west to them and they only focused on moving west and not how the other nations would feel about them moving into their land. -
3/5 Compromise
The 3/5 Compromise was when the fugitive slave law was passed. They wanted the enslaved populations to be counted towards their states overall population size. The Northern states argued that if enslaved people are considered property it should count towards taxation. The Delegates come to an agreement that the population will count towards population and taxation. I think this is sectionalism because it was a disagreement between different geographic sections of the nation. -
Sates Rights
The powers not given to the U.S. government by the Constitution belong the the states or to the people. I think this is nationalism because anything the government does not get the states get. -
Period: to
Underground Railroad
The Underground Railroad was how slaves escaped from enslavement. This was how they gained their freedom. I think this is nationalism because there were lots of enslaved people and they all found out how to get away from their owners as a group. -
Missouri Compromise
The Missouri Compromise happened because admitting Missouri as a slave state would give the slave holding states a majority in the Senate. The Missouri Compromise resolved by when Missouri was admitted as a slave state and Maine as a Free State. I think this is Nationalism because it was a Nation problem and they fixed it with the states and nation figuring it out. -
Compromise of 1850
California was admitted as a Free State. The Fugitive State Law was passed. Sovereignty in UT and NM. Texas received 10 million dollars. The D.C. Slave Trade Banned. I think it was sectionalism because it was between the states and different things happened. -
Fugitive Slave Law
This was part of the 1850 Compromise. This act stated that slaves need to go back to their owner even if they lived in a free state. I think this is sectionalism because it doesn't matter which state you live in every slave has to go back to their owner. -
Secession
They withdrew 11 slave states from the union. I think this is sectionalism because it is only taking 11 states away. They only take 11 states away and they are slave states so it's a geographic conflict throughout states. -
Emancipation Proclamation
In the third year of Civil War Abe Lincoln said that all people called as slaves should be held free. I think this would be nationalism because it talks about ALL slaves being set free. It says it doesn't matter if you are in a slave state or a free states you will be set free if you are a slave.
