KAU elects first president
The Kenya African Union political party elect Jomo Kenyatta as their president.He begins recieving death threats immediatly thereafter by white settlers. -

A small faction of the KAU form a group known as the Mau Mau were they participate in terrorist acts against white british settlers.Kenya is declared in a stae of emergency until 8 years later when the British deem Kenya safe again. -
Kenyatta Freed from Jail
The British free Jomo Kenyatta from jail who was imprisoned immediatly after the Mau Mau Uprising began due to their belief that he had a role in the terrorist attacks.He assumes the seat of president of the KANU. -
Kenyan Independence
Kenya gains independence from the United K.ingdom.KANU takes over and forms an emergency government with Kenyatta as prime minister. -
The Republic of Kenya Formed
Kenya becomes a republic and Kenyatta's title is now president of Kenya and his vice-president is Jaramogi Oginga Odinga -
Assassination of Tom Mboya
The government minister of economic planning and development, Tom Mboyo is gunned down and assassinated after leaving a Kenyan pharmacy.His death sparks ethnic unrest,leads to the KPU banment and the arrest of Odinga who was its founder. -
Kenyatta's Death
Kenya's president,serving in his second term dies of natural causes at his home in Mombasa.His vice-president Daniel arap Moi becomes president. -
Attempted Coup
The Kenya Air Force attempts a coup which leads to a change in the constitution that dictates KANU the only legal political party. -
Constitution Amended
Due to domestic protests and international pressures Moi amands the constitution to allow for a multi-party system.This is a stark contrast to his June 1,1982 amendment to the constitution stating that KANU only legal party. -
Tribal Conflict/Massacre
An estimated two thousand Kikuyu were slaughtered in the Rift Valley by Kalenjin and Masai warriors.300,000 were forced to flee from theirs homes while the others were murdered.Their crime had been to vote for the political opposition,against KANU. -

The majority of the public vote Moi back into office for another 5 years.KANU party majority.(elected again in1997) -
United States Embassy Bombings
Hundreds of people were killed in simultaneous truck bomb explosions ate the U.S embassies in Kenya and Tanzania.The attacks were linked to local members of the Egyptian Islamic Jihad and Osama bin Laden. -
Elections Held for New President
Following the end of Moi's presidential term,elections are held for a new president.Mwai Kibaki, a Kikuyu and the leader of the National Rainbow Coalition (NRC) defeats the KANU candidate.Kibaki promises to end government corruption,ethnic favoritism,improve living standard,and the economy in Kenya. -

The NRC enacts the Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes Act and the Public Officer Ethics Act aimed at fighting corruption in the government.Helped increase internation investment and foreign aid to Kenya. -

Election Debate Between Kibaki and Odinga
Kenya holds presidential elections.Kibaki runs as leader of the Party of National Union.Raila Odinga opposes him as the leader of the Orange Democratic Movement.3 days later Kibaki is announced the winner and is sworn in to office.Because his party suffered National Assembly losses in several regions of Kenya,Odinga accuses Kibaki of election fraud and demands a recount. -
Odinga and Kibaki Agreement
Odinga and Kibaki sign a power sharing agreement inder which Kibaki would remain as president and Odinga as prime minister with the power to coordinate the functions of the government. -
Grand Coalition
President Kibaki created a grand coalition cabinet of 41 members,unitingthe two largest political parties into one. -
New Constitution Voting
A change in the constittuion is proposed that would eliminate the position of prime minister and reduce the powers of the prime minister.A referendum to vote on the proposed changes is today.It passes by a wide margin.
