Sewing Machine in Progress
The first functional sewing machine was invented in France in 1830 by Barthelemy Thimonnier. Thimonnier's machine used only one thread and a hooked needle that made the same chain stitch used with embroidery. His factory was burned down, and he was almost killed by French tailors who were afraid that his sewing machine would put them out of business. -

Sewing machines went into mass production in the 1850's, when Isaac Singer built the first commercially successful machine. -

The Death of the Corset
During World War I, the U.S. War Industries Board asked women to stop buying corsets so that the metal could be used instead for war production. Afterwards, the popularity of corsets began to decline. However, body shaping garments were still worn through the 1920s. Also, there are some modern body shaping garments used today, but corsets are mainly used for fashion purposes or lingerie. -
Flappers
After WWI, a new type of style gained popularity; flappers. The The style consisted of drastic changes in women's clothing and hair. The clothing was trimmed down and lightened in order to make movement easier. The image of the flapper was also a symbol of changing youth. -
PANTS!
Women began wearing their husbands trousers during World War I. However, during the 70s, trousers became a popular fashion for women. -

During the 1980s, wild colors and patterns were popular. Everything was bigger. (ie. hair, makeup, jewelry, etc.)
