The French Revolution
The French Revolution was when the country of France overthrew the monarchy and took control over the government. It lasted for 10 years from 1789-1799. Napolean helped end the revolution by overthrowing the revolutionary government and became the leader. -
Wedgwood and Davy
Thomas Wedgwood and Humphry Davy experimented with light sensitive materials. They tried to fix an image of an object's shadow by using a silver nitrate solution. They also attempted in capturing imgaes formed in a camera obscura. Although their experiments weren't successful, they are still known in the scientific community because of their attempt in creating a photograph. -
Darwin's Theory of Evolution
Charles Darwin wrote a book about the experience of creatures and genetic mutation prior to birth. He came up with the theory of natural selection and this was a major controversy with the Catholic church. -
Niépce's "Sun Writing"
Joseph Nicéphore Niépce developed the "sun writing" which is a heliography process. He created a photograph called "View from the Window at Gras," and it is considered to be the world's first permanent photograph. -
Ethnic & Economic Photographs
William Carrick, a Scottish-born photographer, worked in Russia taking photographs of street sellers of the city. This started a trend of taking photographs of people at factories & industrial sites ranging from people carrying tools to craftspeople dressed in work clothes. -
Lewis Carroll's Photographs
Charles L. Dodgson is a known author of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland but wrote under the name Lewis Carroll. He did many kinds of photographs but what sparked controversy was his photography of female children with ripped clothing or bare feet. There was a lot of debate of him taking these kinds of photos that they were too sexual but then again he had the permission of these children's parents. -
Daguerre & Talbot
Fox Talbot read about Daguerre's image-mkaing process and tried to make his own work known after that. Although their own inventions were different, they still made an impact for photography. It was a competition in trying to raise national pride. -
Aleksei Grekov's Booklets
Aleksei Grekov had a booklet talked about having color in photographs and images. This gave out the idea of having an artist apply the color directly on the daguerreotype. -
Japan
There was a rapid growth of commercial photography in Japan. Since this occurred the United States & Japan helped start the modernization in largely feudal country. -
Talbot's Calotype
Fox Talbot was patent for his work in the "Calotype," a photographic process. Calotype were able to produce from a negative and was also able to produce multiple copies. This became the basis for modern photographic reproduction. -
Cyanotype of Anna Atkins
Scientific illustrator Anna Atkins created the cyanotype impressions of the algae species and other specimens too. Anna Atkins is known to be the very first female photographer. Her work is well known because she is the first to work with photographic illustrations. -
Mathew Brady
Mathew Brady is best remembered for his photography of the battlefield during the American Civil War. His style of photography was portraits, and his photography were sometimes used for personal publicity. -
Mexican American War
This war was a conflict between the United States of America and Mexico from 1846-1848. This battled occurred because they were fighting fro land. Mexico was fighting to keep its land and the United States wanted to gain more land. -
Revolution of 1848
The Revolutions of 1848 were a series of democratic revolts throughout Europe. There were aimed to remove the old monarchical structure and aimed in creating independent states. -
Second Sikh War
This war was a conflict between the Sikh Empire and British East India Company that occured between 1848 & 1849. This resulted in the overruling of the Sikh kingdom of the Punjab. -
Second Burma War
The Second Burma War was the second of the three wars fought between Burmese and British. The result of this war was the extinction of Burmese sovereignty. -
Crimean War
The Crimean War occurred between 1853 & 1856, and was fought between Russia and an alliance consisting of France, Britain, Turkey and Sardinia. It was fought because of having control of religious sites between the Catholic France and Orthodox Russia. -
Frederick H. Evans
Evans, played a lot with the light and darkness with this photograph. It’s usually more typical to see the focal point of a photograph to be in the center of the image, but Frederick H. Evans made the focal point to be in the upper left corner. The arched doorway contains the most light in the image and the stairs contains more of the darkness. His purpose was to capture an emotional and aesthetic response by using elements such as space, light, and shadow in interior cathedrals. -
Carte-De-Viste
Carte-De-Viste, or "card photograph" was a process called stereograph. André Adolphe Eugène Disdéri was a French photographer that was patented for this. This was a small portrait photograph that was meant to be on back of regular visiting card. -
James Robertson
James Robertson is also a well-known photographer during the Crimean Wars. He is also known to be an accomplished amateur landscape photographer. During the Crimean War he is known to have created 60 images. -
Roger Fenton
Roger Fenton took photographs of the Crimean War, & it was difficult for him to obtain actual photographs while the war was occurring. Fenton took photographs by collodion process which this requires long exposure times, therefore it was difficult to take actual war photos. In a photograph he took called, “The Valley of the Shadow of the Valley of Death,” Fenton probably added more cannon balls around his shot in order to show how a war had recently been taken place. -
American Civil War
This war occurred in the United States of America and lasted from 1861-1865. This war happened because there were differences states of having free or slave states. Eleven states left the Union to become their own country in order to protect the institution of slavery. -
Kodak Camera
In New York, they started manufacturing the Kodak camera, this was one of many cameras that was intended to be used by middle-class consumers. The camera already had fixed lens and it was introduced with paper coated with light-sensitive material. -
Non-Pictorialist
As more inventions came out such as roll films and hand cameras, it allowed many hobbyist to go their own way. Charles L. Mitchell had said "There are too many 'impressions' & too few clearly conceived. Non-Pictorialist efforts can be seen in the work amateurs whose fame came from others were preserved.
