Attack Experiment program
In 1966 the USAF formed the Attack Experimental (A-X) program office. On 6 March 1967, the Air Force released a request for information to 21 defense contractors for the A-X. The objective was to create a design study for a low-cost attack aircraft. -

The A-10 was finshed on May 10,1972. -
The A-10's first flight.
The A-10's first flight was on May 10,1972. The same day it got finished after a few years of research of and development. The A-10's test flight was also a success. -
The mass first production A-10 flew
Sometime during October,1975. The first mass produced A-10 flew. -
First time the A-10 flew for combat.
The A-10 was used in combat for the first time during the Gulf War in 1991. It destroyed more than 900 Iraqi tanks, 2,000 other military vehicles and 1,200 artillery pieces. Making it by far the most effective aircraft of the war. -
The A-10's replacment
The A-10 is not expected to be replaced until somewhere in early 2028. But when it is, it'll probably be replaced by the F-35. But until then the USAF will use the A-10 extensively in military and recon missions because of it's incredible durability and survival power.
