In 1836, Jackson got Potawatomi leaders to sign a treaty giving away Indian lands in Illinois and Indiana. The trek was made in 1838, moving 850 Potawatomi Indians. There were at least 40 casualites from disease and stress. Most who died were children. They marched 660 miles from their homes into Kansas. (this was another direct result of the IRA of 1830)

During Andrew Jackson's presidency, the Americans became more land-hungry than ever. They wanted the Indians off of their property, and Jackson passed the Indian Removal Act, He wasn't stopped from removing the Indians even when the Supreme Court ruled his dealings unconstitutional, moving over 15,000 Indians from GA to present-day OK by foot. 4,000+ died from disease, exhaustion, and starvation.
