John Adams was president and a Fedralist. He was running for a second term against Thomas Jefferson. Jefferson was a Democrat- Republican. Jefferson and his running mate Aaron Burr tied in the electoral votes. Jefferson won the election and became president. -
Marbury v. Madison Supreme Court Decision
Marbury petitioned the Supreme Court to force the secratary of State to deliver his commission. Madison denied the petition; he said it was unconstitutional. It was the first time that had happened. It established the judicial review, which plays a key role in checks and balances. -
Louisiana Purchase
The Unitied States bought Louisiana from France for 15 million dollars. The Louisisana purchase doubled the size of the country at that time. -
Lewis and Clark reach the Pacific Ocean
President Thomas Jefferson sent Lewis and Clark west to find the northwest passage. They reached the Pacific Ocean only to discover that a Northwest passage does not exsist. -
Treaty of Ghent
This treaty ended the War of 1812 between the United States of America and the United Kingdom of Great Britian and Ireland. -
