Pierre was killed accidentally in a street accident.During this accident his skull was run over by a buggy and crushed. Marie became very depressed similar to when she was a child. Sorbonne University gave Marie Curie the option to take over Pierre's job, being the first woman chair of the Physics department as well as their first woman professor.

Marie Curie won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1911. She was the sole winner of this award. It was for work she did after her husbands death while she held his position at Sorbonne University. This is significant because it was her first and only prize won by herself and she was recognized for all of the work done and her own ideas.
