    Ghana Collapses
    Ghana began to collapse because of the Almoravid attacks. The resluting war was too much for Ghana and it ended its commercial and military power. It then collaped into different tribal groups.

    Kingdon Conquered
    In 1200, the Kingdom of Ghana was conquered by the Kingdom Melle. Different kingdoms broke up or were taken over and most of the population moved south. Different tribes started to mix during the next few centuries.

    Ancient Ghana existed beteween 300 AD and 1100 AD. It was located between the Niger and Gambia Rivers. They depended on the rivers for trade because it was the fastest way to transport goods.

    In 400, the Ghana Empire became the most powerful and important empire in Africa. It controlled the gold and salt trade across the Sahara Desert. It was close to the height of its power at this time. This picture shows a gold mine in Ghana.

    Portuguese arrive in Ghana
    In 1471, Portuguese traders came Ghana.They were looking for a sailing route to the Far East but when they saw the Ghanaian people wearing gold jewelry, they stayed to dicover Ghana's gold. The Portuguese built mant different forts in Ghana and they also introduced Christianity to Ghana.

    The Dutch came to Ghana at this time and started to build forts. There was a lot of competition between the Dutch and Portuguese for control of the area and in 1637 and 1642, the Dutch took over two Portuguese forts.

  • Ghana Independence

    On March 6th 1957, Ghana gained independence from Britain. At the time of the British rule, the country was called the Gold Coast because they are abundant in gold. After they gained independnce, it was called Ghana after the ancient kingdon of Ghana. Ghana holds its independence day every year on March 6, in Accura, its capitol.

  • Guinea Fowl War

    This war broke out in 1994 between two ethnic groups called Konkombas and Nunumbas over a land conflict. 2,000 people were killed and 150,000 people were displaced. A peace treaty was signed but violence still broke out again over the years following the peace treaty signing.
